![]() | A Werewolf Problem in Central Russia and Other Stories by Victor Pelevin
Buy used from: $1.49 So it's been so long since the last list, these won't be in anything close to order. I'll at least try to post the ones from Minnesota first...in this case, a Russian author's book of short stories, some amazing, some ok, all interesting.

![]() | The Collected Stories of Amy Hempel by Amy Hempel
Buy new: $20.90 / Used from: $3.32 Currently on loan, which I'm not happy about, she is one of the best authors ever, and each one of these short stories will deeply affect the emotions, even if you don't want them to.
![]() | Original Zinn: Conversations on History and Politics by Howard Zinn
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $0.01 Read it while stuck in the music dept. at the old B&N, Zinn has lots of great points that make you think, and references many amazing books, including the next one...
![]() | Hiroshima by John Hersey
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $0.01 I read the older version, without the "where are they now?" chapter...still a stunning book, shows effects of war on the everyday people (not soldiers) who survived it.
![]() | Death Be Not Proud (Perennial Classics) by John J. Gunther
Buy used from: $0.01 Certainly interesting, but I think I learned more about the time it was written than what it is actually like to lose a loved one.
![]() | A Separate Peace by John Knowles
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $0.01 Why didn't they make me read this in school? Powerful book, worth taking of few hours to read if you haven't, but you probably have.
![]() | Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression by Studs Terkel
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $5.49 Didn't finish it, but there is a wealth of amazing material here, from people who lived through the depression on the front lines, and not just rich bankers who jumped out of windows (though I suppose they didn't live through it...never mind.)
![]() | Hope Dies Last: Keeping the Faith in Difficult Times by Studs Terkel
Buy used from: $0.01 He knows his stuff. This one is more all over the board than some of his others, but just as fascinating. Read 'em!
![]() | The Areas of My Expertise by John Hodgman
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01 Another music department read. It's got some very informative tables, I'll tell ya that much.
![]() | Jarhead : A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles by Anthony Swofford
Buy used from: $1.00 Better than I thought it would be. Ignore the angry vets giving it bad reviews and just read it!
![]() | Short Timers by Gustav Hasford
Buy used from: $10.30 Difficult to read at times, but well worth it if you have any interest in Vietnam. Inspiration for Full Metal Jacket.
![]() | Bad Haircut: Stories of the Seventies by Tom Perrotta
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.57 Ah, so this is what the seventies were really like. I knew That 70's Show was all lies. Sic Semper Topher Grace! But yeah, this book was very enjoyable indeed. Couldn't stop reading it until it was over.
![]() | A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (P.S.) by Betty Smith
Buy new: $10.76 / Used from: $0.32 Deserves all the hype. Haven't grown up a poor girl in the early 20th century in Brooklyn, but I can tell this is just what it would be like. Didn't want it to end.
![]() | Little Children: A Novel by Tom Perrotta
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $0.01 Not bad, just like the movie. Funny and worth the time, but I don't think I'd read it again. Bad Haircut was infinitely better.
![]() | The Push Man and Other Stories by Yoshihiro Tatsumi
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $9.97 Can't forget this one. Why can't newer manga be more like this? Actually, maybe some is. I don't know. Gritty!
![]() | War is a Racket: The Antiwar Classic by America's Most Decorated Soldier by Smedley D. Butler
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.68 It is, too. Read on if you DARE!
![]() | My Girlfriend Comes to the City and Beats Me Up by Stephen Elliott
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $2.98 Great autobiographical short stories. Bondage, crappy jobs, being homeless, all written about so well that you kinda want to do it all.
![]() | Timbuktu: A Novel by Paul Auster
Buy used from: $0.01 I read this one cause a song name checked it, and wouldn't you know it, it was quite good. Much more down to earth than Auster's other stuff, even if it is from the POV of a dog.
![]() | Collected Prose: Autobiographical Writings, True Stories, Critical Essays, Prefaces, and Collaborations with Artists by Paul Auster
Buy new: $12.75 / Used from: $0.86 Mostly got this for "The Invention of Solitude," an amazing account of Auster dealing with his father's death, but it's all interesting and worth reading. It only costs like $2 more than the invention of solitude by itself.
