beyond the promise of the title.
I t is not an exhaustive treatise on the
A tonement or on Justification: it is an
examination of the New Testament teaching
on the Death of Christ.
That the death of Christ has a place in
the N ev Testament vhich demands for it
the most careful consideration ,vill not be
questioned by anyone j and though the
ground has often been traversed, in whole
or in part, before, there are reasons which
justify at the present time such a study
as follows. One is that, so far as the
vriter can judge, the death of Christ has
not the place assigned to it, either in
preaching or in theology, which it has in
the New Testanlent. There have been
conspicuous examples of essays and even
treatises on the Atonement. standing in r.o
discoverable relation to the New Testament.
