![]() | When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold by Atmosphere
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.49 It's rare to get a disc from seasoned veterans as good as this. Ant's beats and Slug's lyrics paint this s***t gold. This is their best release to date and the best album of 2008. The only drawback is Slug needs a more interesting flow. If you download one song get Guarantees.

![]() | Tronic by Black Milk
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.07 This release is so far beyond anything he's done before, it seemed to come out of nowhere. His production is multi-layered and unique. His drums seem live - no producer can match this drum work. He even stepped up his flow, making him the best rapping producer since the Rza. One song: Long Story Short
![]() | Time:Line by Nicolay & Kay
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $6.99 4 of the top 5 CD's this year were largely based on production. Nicolay is so great he can make a classic CD with a mediocre (but adequate) emcee. Sink into this one. One song: When You Die.
![]() | The Humdinger by Nappy Roots
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $2.55 This just may be the comeback of the year. I never expected this to be so good. Beats are hot southern ish and the flows are sick. They don't need Prophet, Skinny Deville holds it down. One song: No Static.
![]() | White Van Music by Jake One
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.00 I didn't know about Jake One until this release, now he is one of my favorite producers. His beats are unique and fresh. His choice of emcees flow perfectly on this album and inspire some truly stellar verses even from washed-up has beens like Busta Rhymes. One song: The Truth
![]() | The Preface by eLZhi
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.75 Black Milk handles the boards on all except one track, so this cd is all about beats . . . if you ignore the fact that Elzhi's flow is ridiculous and is so fluid it sounds like he's not even trying. Not to mention his lyrics are incredible and inspire repeated listens. Some of the best concept songs I've ever heard are on this album. One song: Guessing Game
![]() | Nas by Nas
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.50 At first I was made at Nas for what he wanted to name this album. Now after hearing it, I'm mad he didn't get to use the title he wanted. The songs all develop the concept of the abandoned title with no disrespect or carelessness at all. Nas has nothing to prove so I'm glad he still cares enough to drop material like this in 2008. One song: Fried Chicken
![]() | The Show by Emc
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $16.21 Some albums are 16 tracks of rhymin' about how hard you are, some are 16 tracks of nonsensical rhyming gibberish (Ghostface!), and some are 22 tracks of well-thought out interesting lyrics that give the listener a reason to listen to more than the beat. Masta Ace and crew put together a wonderful lyrical album. One song: Winds of Change
![]() | And Justus for All by Little Brother
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $8.87 Phonte's conversational, everyman flow combined with his provocative lyrics make every LB disc worth spinning. Throw in nice beats and adequate verses from Big Pooh and you have a nice lp. One song: Life of the Party
![]() | Rising Down by The Roots
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $3.48 The Roots will never be able to reach the classic status of illadelph halflife again, but, unlike most vets, they also can't make a bad album. This has some truly high points and nice guest appearances. One song: Get Busy
![]() | The Odd Couple by Gnarls Barkley
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.95 This was a little disappointing, especially because it is holding Danger Mouse back from doing projects with Black Thought & MF Doom, but it is still a good listen. One song: Who's Gonna Save My Soul
![]() | Behind the Stained Glass by Killah Priest
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $46.48 I think when I bought Heavy Mental I was too young to appreciate Killah Priest. He doesn't try to catch your attention with beat selection, choruses, or a ridiculous flow; he is about straight-up lyricism - no more, no less. One song: 4 Tomorrow
![]() | D.I.R.T. by Heltah Skeltah
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.95 Another comeback of the year. They've become punchline emcees and it works. I know my opinion is the minority, but I think Rock is the standout on this album - he says some crazy ish. One song: Insane
![]() | The 3rd World by Immortal Technique & DJ Green Lantern
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $6.89 I waited too long for new Technique to end up with an album like this. That's not to say it's horrible, it's just no where near the level I expected. I know it's supposed to be a mixtape so hopefully when the real album drops that will be the one worth waiting for. One song: Lick Shots
![]() | Leave It All Behind by The Foreign Exchange
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.98 I waited too long for a Foreign Exchange album to end up with this. If your name ends with the sound a, why you have to start singin'. Phonte follows examples set by Andre, Kanye and Dante (Mos Def). Nicolay's beats are still beautiful though, saving this disc on the whole. One song: Something to Behold
![]() | Remind Me in 3 Days by Knux
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.30 I thought I'd give these new jacks a try. This album is kinda weird and I'm not quite sure where they are comin' from or what they're supposed to be. Overall, it's good. One song: Shine Again
![]() | Murs for President by Murs
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.55 I'm not quite sure how he could make some of these tracks and still sleep at night. He sold out and didn't even sell - that's truly sad. It's not all bad though. He still shines with 9th Wonder. One song: Road is my Religion
![]() | Universal Mind Control by Common
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.91 Speaking of sell outs. . . But this isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Believe it or not Common already sold out back when he made Be. Electric Circus was his last real album. This is at least a good listen. One song: Announcement
![]() | 808s & Heartbreak by Kanye West
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $2.00 What the f is going on with this guy? You should not make a singing album if you can't sing. Good thing his production skills are still in tact. Imagine if he would have given the same beats to someone like Anthony Hamilton or even Cee-Lo, now that could have been classic. One song: Heartless
![]() | Digi Snacks by RZA as Bobby Digital
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.94 It still amazes me how the man who made tracks like C.R.E.A.M., Triumph, and Ice Cream can come out with music like this. One song: You Can't Stop Me Now
![]() | Then What Happened? by J-Live
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.87 Not bad, just kind of boring. One song: Ole
![]() | The Bridge by Tanya Morgan
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $7.98 These guys are like a generic Little Brother. But last year I saw their potential on the track Sonshine off the Asterisk 4 album. Maybe they need outside production to liven it up cause this EP doesn't cut it. One song: Get Me Inside
![]() | Pro Tools by Gza
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $7.79 Gza is done. He should probably retire or just start ghostwriting. By the way, rappers quit puttin' your kids on your albums. One song: Pencil
![]() | Sacrifice by Substantial
Buy used from: $11.95 There was a time - all the way back in 2007 - when I thought that Qn5 could do no wrong, then this album came out. Dude needs to stick to e-f@mm and guest spots, he can't do it solo. Kno and Tondeff beats should never again be wasted on this garbage flow. One song: Sign Language.
![]() | Eleventh Hour by Del The Funky Homosapien
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $3.17 The fans waited years for this album and it sounds like Del put it together over a three-day weekend. Weakest album of the year from someone who is capable of much more. One song: Naked Funk
