By an Amazon.com customer
WatchmenWatchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $26.39 / Used from: $16.50
i will not waste your time detailing what an exceptional work this is... it is the best graphic novel i have yet to read and it is easily one of the best pieces of fiction i have ever experienced.
Batman: Year OneBatman: Year One by Frank Miller
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $7.58
this is a great book for any fan of batman, but also for those who do not read many superhero books. if you enjoyed batman begins, there is a good chance you will like this even more and the story of jim gordon is as enthralling as any super hero tale.
Batman: The Killing JokeBatman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $9.50
while the dark knight movie really does stand on it's own as an amazing piece of fiction as well as an incredible addition to the batman mythos, this book comes as close as any could to being called source material for that movie and in particular for the character of the joker in that film.
Fables Vol. 2: Animal FarmFables Vol. 2: Animal Farm by Bill Willingham
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $5.50
i elected to skip vol. 1 and go right to number 2 because this is the volume that really sinks it's hooks into you. if you read the first volume and are underwhelmed... keep reading; by volume 2 you will really be able to decide if this is for you.
Ex Machina, Vol. 1: The First Hundred DaysEx Machina, Vol. 1: The First Hundred Days by Brian K. Vaughan
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.50
with incredible characterization and wonderful story telling the entire series so far has been a joy to read. i recommend the whole series but especially to anyone who is interested in a twist on the usual superheroics.
Top 10 (Top Ten)Top 10 (Top Ten) by Alan Moore
Buy used from: $12.00
alan moore is without equal, and while not all of his work is as amazing as his name on the cover should seem to imply, this is one book that takes a great premise and puts it in the hands of a master craftmen. volume one is good, but if you read both volumes one and two you will really see what mr. moore can do with a great concept.
Astro City Vol. 2: ConfessionAstro City Vol. 2: Confession by Kurt Busiek
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $4.29
as with many of my previous entries i recommend the whole series, though some books are better than others. this is particularly good and does a fantastic job of putting a twist or two on familiar themes.
Astro City Vol. 4: The Tarnished AngelAstro City Vol. 4: The Tarnished Angel by Kurt Busiek
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.29
this, like confessions is a long story, where some of the other books have shorter tales. also like confessions, this was a great book start to finish.
All Star Superman, Vol. 1All Star Superman, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $5.90
i am not a fan of superman. i am as familiar with the character as anyone and maybe moreso as a comic fan. however, this is such an incredibly fun book to read. it has a lot of emotion and really feels like it captures the lost essence of the character.
Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume (Vol 1)Bone: The Complete Cartoon Epic in One Volume (Vol 1) by Jeff Smith
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $15.00
epic. this book starts out with only faint hints of where it is going and then takes the whimsy of the early stories along to pepper the later tale with humor. all told this is nothing short of epic.
V for VendettaV for Vendetta by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $10.71
i liked the movie very much but the book is not exactly the same and in my opinion, while the essence was captured, the book is far and away a much more engrossing tale.
Animal Man, Book 1 - Animal ManAnimal Man, Book 1 - Animal Man by Grant Morrison
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $8.51
grant morrison is hit or miss for me. he is pretty far out there a lot of the time and i think his writing works best when he is working within the confines of something. left without boundries he tends to fly out in too many directions and can be hard to follow.
Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1Invincible: The Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1 by Robert Kirkman
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $19.00
it is a book like this one that shows how even a tried and true set up can feel completely fresh with some good writing and some great twists.
Frank Miller's Complete Sin City LibraryFrank Miller's Complete Sin City Library by Frank Miller
Buy new: $78.75 / Used from: $152.94
frank miller is a legend. and he is a legend for good reason. his work as a writer is top notch, however, sin city is not filled with complex tales. sin city is filled with simple stories beautifully told with some of the most striking art you will likely ever see in stark black and white.
Pride of BaghdadPride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan
Buy new: $9.22 / Used from: $6.99
this has the feel of a disney cartoon gone all wrong... but in all the right ways (if that makes any sense) the story is very loosely based on true events and while a story with talking lions (they really only talk to themselves and the other animals) may not sound like your cup of tea, i assure you, by the end of the book you will find yourself attached to these characters.
Batman: The Dark Knight ReturnsBatman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $5.00
frank miller's batman: year one as well as this book work perfectly as bookends to whatever batman tales you choose to read and include in the whole story of batman. i felt like this book had less focus than year one, but did a steller job of portraying batman as an old warhorse.
Heavy LiquidHeavy Liquid by Paul Pope
Buy new: $26.39 / Used from: $17.99
this book really surprised me. there is so much more than even what makes it's way into the book that you will find yourself thinking about this one long after you turn the final page.
The Books of MagicThe Books of Magic by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $5.58
this story goes the long way around to get the reader to the end, but the art and the near poetry of the piece makes the journey the whole point. if you like harry potter then you will like this.
Terminal CityTerminal City by Dean Motter
Buy used from: $2.20
this is a good example of a book that, while not exceptional, was unique enough and made with enough care and consideration that i really felt it was worth reading. this is not something that everyone has read, but it is something that those of us who have read many of the books off of these "best" lists might find worth while.
300300 by Frank Miller
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $5.20
everything about the movie that seemed over the top crazy was a product of the movie, as well as the story about the queen. unlike the relationship most books have to the movies they inspire, this book has less to it, but the end result is better for it.
The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye (v. 1)The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye (v. 1) by Robert Kirkman
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.49
the end of every zombie movie feels the same to me... "now what?" this series attempts to keep the story going and does so with enough twists and surprises that it never gets stale. great series, period.
I Kill GiantsI Kill Giants by Joe Kelly
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $10.94
bittersweet and great.
Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: UnmannedY: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $4.75
this series; more than any other i have read, feels like a really great movie. the events are all leading us to an ending but it is the journey and the characters (yorick in particular) that make it great.
Scalped Vol. 1: Indian CountryScalped Vol. 1: Indian Country by Jason Aaron
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.39
gritty and raw and a ton of fun.
