From Library Journal
Chicano poet, author, and teacher Arteaga is a distinctive voice in international poetry circles. He has published poetry collections and edited an anthology of essays dealing with alternative literary voices. In this little book, Arteaga gathers an eclectic collection of poems, literary and artistic criticism, and personal reflections. Each piece can stand on its own; together they illuminate Arteaga's Chicano perspective as he confronts racism, political repression, and the place of the artist in society. The best essays are drawn from his own experiences, a summer spent working in the L.A. morgue while in college during the Vietnam War and a short piece on the experience of reading with the help of a translator. His observations as a seasoned traveler and member of a much larger international community provide a needed balance to the racial prejudice he encounters. A difficult book to classify, libraries with developing multicultural collections may want to consider.?Denise S. Sticha, Seton Hill Coll., Greensburg, Pa.
