Bravo to a New Star
A piano accompanist once told me that there were a lot of young clarinet players out there, but there were only a few of them good. Unfortunately, what she said was true. But this teenage clarinetist, Julian Bliss, is sure of the exception. Although he was very young when this CD was recorded, he showed tremendous talents and artistry in his playing. It is rare to find a wind player like him who is so mature at such a tender age.
He was born in the UK, and came to the US for his clarinet professional training in the Indiana University. He was too young for the regular degree program in IU, he got an Artist Diploma instead. He then went back to Europe for more study.
In this CD, he recorded Poulenc's Sonata (1-3), Andre Messager's "Solo de concours" (4), Jean Francaix' "Theme and Variations" (9), Luigi Bassi's "Concert Fantasia on Motives from Verdi's `Rigoletto'" (13), and more.
The recording quality of this CD is excellent. Highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys clarinet playing.
Astonishing teen prodigy
Julian Bliss rocked the music world with his Queen's jubilee performance in 2002 during the week of his 13th birthday. Considering that Julian is 15 in July of 2004, this is astonishing clarinet artistry. There are few clarinetists in the world with this ability...and none of his age. Julian has charisma, as well as a mature sensitivity to music for a teenager. He is, indeed, a prodigy, with his beginnings as a clarinetist at age 4 and first performance at age 6. This appears to be the first of three recordings that EMI will release for Julian Bliss, and I look forward to the next two releases.
