Advanced technology and durable construction make the Timex Men's Ironman Triathlon Solar Dual-Tech Watch #T5G681 perfect for the serious athlete. The large, crisp digital gray dial makes the watch's multiple advanced functions easy to use. As well as displaying the time and a day/date calendar, the watch includes a chronograph function, two-mode countdown timer, alarm, and 50-lap recall. The "Indiglo" night light illuminates the dial for those early morning or late-night runs. With its brushed, stainless steel bezel sporting etched black lettering, a black stainless steel case, and a comfortable resin band, this watch provides durability and athletic good looks. The solar-powered watch is water resistant to 330 feet and is backed by a one-year manufacturer's warranty.
Customer Reviews
Good set of features, reasonably accurate, could be brighter
The Timex Ironman Thriathlon Solar Dual-Tech watch is a good ana-digi solar watch.
I bought it from Pro Sport Watches through Amazon.com and the first watch I received went bad after about a month when the mode button stopped working. Upon receiving my email inquiry they immediately shipped the replacement unit and a return envelope with no questions asked even though it was either on the verge or maybe even over the 30 day return period. If this review was only about my experience shopping with Pro Sport Watches and dealing with their service and support, I'd give them the highest rating.
I also own the ultimate Casio Protrek triple sensor analog-digital watch which is a class (and unfortunately two sizes of thickness and diameter) above this one and many other far more expensive watches, so I'm a bit biased as I was comparing this model to the features of the one about triple the price.
Pros:
- Nice combination of analog and digital features (besides solar technology, this is a must have for my watches)
- Really sophisticated attractive combination of black screen and "bright" numbers, but more about brightness under cons
- Solar charging
- Accurate
- Good combination (better than Protrack) of stop watch and count-down timers and alarms.
- Three different times to set on the digital clock, easily changed by the single or two sequential pressings of the lower start/split button.
- Digital screen can be toggled on and off by holding the stop/reset button for 3 seconds so you have a choice of a simple and sophisticated vs technical gadget look.
- Reasonably priced considering the features (although I would have thought twice had it not been on sale).
- Great intuitive Timex menus (in comparison I find Casios a bit cryptic)
Cons:
- The digital dial is rather dim and far from being bright as on the picture
- Either the seconds markings or the seconds hand movement is inaccurate, so you have a feeling that the dial and the seconds hand are a bit misaligned, just enough to make you wonder if everything is OK. This was the case on both the defective watch and the replacement unit, so I suppose this is a design flaw.
- The watch itself has so many colors and letters it almost looks like a Timex billboard. The least appreciated is the word SOLAR placed above the 9 o'clock position of the dial. Besides this one there are big capital letters SOLAR at the bottom of the bezel, so I really don't understand why they had to put the same thing over the dial and lower the efficiency of the solar cell and visibility of the dial.
- Another negative for color on my scorecard is the bracelet, which is grey plastic and even if it's quality design and seems sturdy, I'd prefer it were black just like the watch. This way it makes the watch lack sophistication and it looks a bit like a toy.
Summary: Although a bit sophomoric design, the good combination of analog-digital features, solar technology and reasonable pricing when on sale got this watch onto my wishlist.
Nice watch, but WATERPROOFING AND ANALOG FAILED!!!
This watch is good. The battery never runs out, the digital part is accurate, and it looks nice. HOWEVER, within 2 weeks of getting this watch the analog hands failed, and then just today the waterproofing failed in the pool, I was able to un-fog the screen by opening the watch, but the buttons are all unresponsive and the screen is dead. Contacting timex now to see if they will repair it.
Cool watch. Display photo is deceptive, you'll never get that kind of visibility in real life.
I own/have owned several Timex watches, usually love the functionality/price ratio of most of them.
This one's a cool idea, like the dual analog/digital display, charged by light should last forever, choice of digital displays including none. Sadly, the visibility of the digital part only looks like that photo when you're in pitch darkness using the IndiGLO to light it up. In daylight (when most people run) you have to hold it at precisely 26.116798 degrees incident to the sun to even see the digits at all. Forget about it looking like that photo in the daytime. On a cloudy day, good luck seeing it at all, because it's not dark enough for the indiglo and not light enough to get your precise incident angle to the sky. In pitch dark, you'll have to reach over with your other hand to kick in the Indiglo, because this one mysteriously doesn't have the FLIX functionality.
Also, the analog hands obstruct the digital part. Eg, if you run around noon you won't be able to see the top digital display, or around 5:30/6:30 good luck seeing the bottom one. Annoying if you rely on splits in either one.
Also agree with other reviewers [elsewhere] that the placement of the SOLAR logo on the face at 9:00 is unnecessarily large and downright annoying because at first glance you'll think one of the analog hands is at the 9:00 position. Monster logo should be around the edge of the dial somewhere.
Close, but not quite.
