Amazon.com Product Description
Moving from the laptop to the desktop, Asus has taken the miniaturization efforts its applied to its popular line of Eee PC laptops and created the Eee Box--a stylish, low-power desktop PC with a minimal footprint. Slim as a paperback novel, the Eee Box can help you reclaim space on your desk or it can mount on the back of a VESA-compatible HDTV for use as a PC media hub. And despite a choice of colors, including black and silver, the Eee Box is overwhelmingly green with its Intel Atom processor helping to reduce system power requirements to just 20W--which helps to reduce your electric bill as well as your carbon footprint. It's also barely audible, producing just 26 decibels of noise--just above the level of a quiet whisper.

The Asus Eee Box in black.

To overcome clutter, the Eee Box mounts to the rear of any LCD monitor.

With a 7-second boot time and the Asus Express Gate start-up screen, you'll enjoy almost instantaneous access to the Internet and video chatting.

The Eee Box includes four USB ports, digital audio output for surround sound, and Gigabit Ethernet for fast wired networking.
It runs the familiar Windows XP Home operating system and it's powered by the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, which uses a brand new design structure based on hafnium-infused circuitry to help reduce electrical current leakage and conserve energy. Other features include an 80 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM, Draft-N Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g/n), four USB ports (including two on the front), DVI video output, and included round metal stand.

An accessible touch sensor button and vertical placement exudes a seamless and futuristic outlook, while smooth curves further accentuate a refined form that compliments most interior designs. The Eee Box even mounts VESA LCD displays for the ultimate space-saving solution (VESA 75/100 standard mount). With the exclusive Express Gate, ASUS' innovative fast boot technology, you can easily access the Internet, manage pictures, or communicate over IM/Skype just 7 seconds after boot up.

Compared to full-sized desktop solutions, the Eee Box's energy-efficient performance reduces power consumption by up to 90 percent. The Eee Box also utilizes Green Design and is made with only earth-friendly materials for reduced CO2 emissions, and it conforms to stringent RoHS and WEEE standards. Thus, you can be socially responsible while working, learning and playing in style. The innovative ASUS thermal solution also integrates a unique heat dissipation module with the AI fan, allowing quiet (26db) and comfortable computing.

The Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure that packs in 47 million transistors into a single chip sized at just 22mm (0.87 inches), and it uses just 2.5 watts of power--less than 1/10 of the 35 watts used by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor--for excellent battery management. This 1.6 GHz Atom processor also includes a power-optimized front side bus of 533 MHz for faster data transfer on demanding mobile applications and a 512 KB L2 cache (which temporarily stores data).

You get four USB 2.0 ports (two on the front of the PC), a DVI output for connecting to external monitors, headphone/line-out jack with digital audio output for surround sound, and a multi-format memory card slot (compatible with SD/MMC/Memory Stick media).

The Eee Box supports the latest Wi-Fi 802.11n wireless standard, providing up to six times faster connectivity than previous 802.11b/g wireless. You can download a 30 minute video in only 44 seconds (speed dependent on video source)--minimizing the wait and allowing time for twice as many movies. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks, commonly found in older home routers. You also get super-fast wired connectivity via the Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).

It comes preinstalled with the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, which offers more experienced users an enhanced and innovative experience that incorporates Windows Live features like Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging and Windows Live Mail for consolidated email accounts on your desktop. Complementing this is Microsoft Works, which equips the user with numerous office applications to work efficiently.

Excellent small windows box5
Comes down to what do you need? I needed a small, portable PC desktop that runs XP. I use it for remote desktop and VMware client - then I map drives to other servers to run other stuff like music. So, not a huge need for a powerhouse. But, more importantly, I needed it to be small enough for me to grab and move - yet still strong enough to power a 1680x1050 resolution 22" flat screen. It does all that and it is just awesome. (Linux was not an option for me - I use windows and have no desire to emerse myself in the Linux world just to run a cheap, small, portable PC). Major thumbs up on this box. If anything, I wish it had a solid state drive - although it is currenly super quiet, so I guess I have nothing to complain about there. The wireless was spotty for me, so I just slap a cable on. Not sure if its my network or the EEE box... but I got dropped a LOT and just got frustrated.

Perfect little 24/7 Box!5
I love this little machine. I would buy 10 more if I only had the need to do so. I probably use this computer a little differently than most, but really this computer gives 98% of the people out there all the performance they need, all while taking little space, making virtually zero noise, using little energy, and all at a very low price. If my 79 year old grandmother didn't already have a desktop PC, I'd have bought this machine for her in a heartbeat.

Now, like I said, I probably use this machine a little differently than most. I have it set up behind my entertainment center, behind my HDTV. I have it attached to my network, really, to serve 4 different purposes. One, as a general file server for the various machines on my network. Two, as a streaming media server (music and video files) to my PS3 and XBOX 360 to enjoy everything on my HDTV and through the AVR. Four, I use it to operate as my BitTorrent box; I use this machine to download and seed torrents without tying up any of my other machines. And finally, and really the primary reason I got it, as a machine to run 24/7, 365 days a year to operate my MagicJack as my home phone service. I have my MagicJack wired into my home wiring so with this machine running constantly, I get a home phone line for the equivalent of $20/year.

Oh, and really the reason that I chose this machine to use as a 24/7 box (other than the fact that it's dead silent and tiny) is that even at full bore, it never draws more than 16 watts (measured at the outlet with my Kill-A-Watt). It used a fraction of the electricity compared to the old PC I used to operate 24/7 for all these purposes. Can't beat it. Especially for the [cheap] price. Oh, and I rather like the included keyboard.

Additionally, because of this box and the snappiness of the Atom processor (plus its low power consumption) I've also ordered a 10" MSI Wind netbook with the Atom processor.

Update: I've since run out of HD space that came in this box and bought a cheap 2.5" notebook hard drive and swapped it out (I can't remember if I put a 250GB or a 320GB hard drive). It's still working great and was one of the easiest hard drive replacements I've ever done.

Excellent Space Saver5
I bought this as a gift for my wife. She had been using a slow old tower PC that took up a lot of space in her small home office. Her ASUS Eee PC is now the fastest in the house and she gets the best wireless reception. It takes up no space and can now become her portable computer. Instead of having to take a laptop and worrying about moving information between machines, she can now just take her office computer with her when we travel, for example, to our winter home. It will just require the purchase of an additional LCD monitor and keyboard and positioning them there. By the way, I don't think the product description mentioned this, but the ASUS Eee PC came with a keyboard and laser mouse included in the package.
