Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Black Body Only)Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Black Body Only)
Buy used from: $349.00
This has been replaced with the XSi, but the XTi is still a solid camera body for beginners. Cheaper than the XSi, it’s best to buy Used, from someone who barely used it at all. This camera has a 1.6x image multiplier built into the camera. If you want to spend even less on a camera body, check out the the Digital Rebel XT. P.S. Do NOT get the worthless kit lens that comes with the body
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens for Canon DSLR CamerasCanon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras
Buy new: $990.00 / Used from: $979.95
Your all-purpose, everyday zoom lens. Yes, the price is very steep, but this could also be one of the only lenses you might ever need for most of your photographic purposes. You can shoot fairly wide at 17mm, the lens is pretty sharp for a non-L series lens, and it's decently fast at f/2.8. It has IS (image stabilization) to boot! Hoo boy, where do I sign up?
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $349.95 / Used from: $309.00
If the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens is too expensive for you, this is a great alternative. Although this isn’t a zoom, this fantastic lens will let you to take really sharp pictures with less available light than other lenses. Say “goodbye” to unintentionally blurry pictures. Additionally, this lens is nearly perfect for portrait photography when coupled with the XTi's built-in 1.6x image multiplier

Buy new: $16.02 / Used from: $19.99
You need a memory card to start taking pictures! Dear Lord these things have gotten cheap since I started taking pictures. . . . Do a little research to see what brand of CF card is better. I use Kingston, but this one is cheaper by a couple of bucks.
The Digital Photography BookThe Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $14.61 / Used from: $13.97
In my opinion, this is the fastest way to learn how to take better pictures. Scott Kelby is fantastic and you should read this book from cover to cover if you're just starting off.
The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2 by Scott Kelby
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.95
The followup to his first book, Volume 2 contains more great tips for photographers who are just starting off. Some of this book is a rehash of old material, but it's worth revisiting (usually).

A cleaning kit for your camera and lens. Clean your camera more often than you think you need to. Dust accumulates very fast, so you'll want to be careful.
Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR CamerasCanon Speedlite 580EX II Flash for Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $391.95 / Used from: $384.99
I'd rather shell out the cash for something good than buy some used stuff that I'll probably be wanting to get rid of later, so I think this flash unit is great. It's one of the most powerful speedlites on the market and will let you control other Canon flashes as slaves. This thing shines when you use it off-camera (check www.strobist.com. It's FANTASTIC)
Roscolux Swatch Book, Small Sampler of Almost Every Filter.Roscolux Swatch Book, Small Sampler of Almost Every Filter.
These are a good fit for your flash head. They may not fit perfectly but for the price, they can't be beat.
Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce for the Canon 580EX FlashSto-Fen Omni-Bounce for the Canon 580EX Flash
Buy new: $8.50 / Used from: $4.99
Light mods that you want can probably be made at home with some old tupperware, cardboard, foil, glue, tape, velcro, rubber tubing, and wax paper. It may sound cheap, but if you've gotten this far, you've already spent a ton of money! Consider making grid spots, snoots, gobos, flags, collapsible soft boxes, collapsible ring lights, beauty dishes, flash diffusers, bounce cards, and reflectors.
Energizer Rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries (8 Pack)Energizer Rechargeable AA NiMH Batteries (8 Pack)
Buy new: $14.95
You'll need these for your strobe, which takes 4 AA batteries apiece. You'll also want to get one of those 15-minute chargers, which are fantastic. You don't HAVE to charge these batteries for the full 15 minutes – most of the juice is recharged within the first couple of minutes. It's a good idea to keep spare batteries on hand, just in case.

Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic LightingLight: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting by Fil Hunter
Buy new: $28.74 / Used from: $24.00
A fantastic book for photographers who want to learn how to light. David Hobby also highly recommends this book on his blog, Strobist.com.
Canon Wireless Remote Control RC1 for Digital RebelCanon Wireless Remote Control RC1 for Digital Rebel
Buy new: $25.95
A great little remote to trigger your camera wirelessly. The range on it is pretty bad, but the price can't be beaten and it couldn't be easier to use. All you do is set your camera to the self timer/remote mode, turn this remote on, and fire away. This is most useful when used with a solid tripod.
Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 Transceiver For Canon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR CamerasPocket Wizard FlexTT5 Transceiver For Canon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $219.00 / Used from: $207.00
The latest toy from PocketWizard. Words do this little guy no justice because it’s fantastic and makes life so much easier. You'll need another unit to receive the signal. Search for the PocketWizard MiniTT1 (recommended) or the PocketWizard Plus II (with a "hot shoe to miniphone" adapter). The cheap alternative to all this high-tech, expensive gadgetry is to use a sync cable, plus adapters.
PocketWizard MiniTT1 Radio Transmitter for Canon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR CamerasPocketWizard MiniTT1 Radio Transmitter for Canon TTL Flashes and Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $199.00 / Used from: $180.00
The MiniTT1, as mentioned above (see the description for the FlexTT5). I'd explain how to use the sync cables mentioned previously, but I don't have room.
Westcott 750 Photo Basics 7.0-Foot Light StandWestcott 750 Photo Basics 7.0-Foot Light Stand
Buy new: Too low to display
This suggestion comes courtesy of David Hobby, of Strobist fame (please visit his blog at www.strobist.com. He's FANTASTIC). You don't have to buy this particular light stand. Just look for a light stand that is compact (a 5-section is good, but mine only has 3 sections). It should be about 6 feet tall when fully extended. You can get an awesome light stand for less than $30.

You need this for your umbrella bracket/swivel holder. This will diffuse your flash to make soft, pretty light. Again, go read David Hobby's blog at www.Strobist.com for all the information.
Canon 430EX Speedlite Flash for Canon Pro1, Pro 90, G Series and all EOS SLR CamerasCanon 430EX Speedlite Flash for Canon Pro1, Pro 90, G Series and all EOS SLR Cameras
Buy new: $399.00 / Used from: $230.00
You can use this as a flash or as a slave to the 580 EX II. A newer version exists, but I don't think it’s worth it. Heck, buy two of these. Extra lights are great for when you want to take your photography to a new level. Portraits just look better when you have a background light and another light as a kicker/rim/backlight/hair light (see chapter 7 in Light: Science and Magic, listed above)
Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber 4 Section Tripod with Q90 Column and Magnesium Castings (Black)Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber 4 Section Tripod with Q90 Column and Magnesium Castings (Black)
Buy new: $419.90 / Used from: $397.99
Carbon fiber is lighter in weight than other materials used to make tripods. Additionally, it handles vibrations better. This is handy when you want ultra sharp pictures. Note: You'll need to buy a separate head attachment in order to affix your camera to the tripod. Don't ask me why. That's just the way things are.
Manfrotto 322RC2 Joystick Head ShortManfrotto 322RC2 Joystick Head Short
Buy new: $120.00 / Used from: $113.99
A fantastic ballhead for your tripod. This makes life much easier when using a tripod. Fast and secure, you won't regret buying a trigger-handle style ball head.
Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized ZoomCanon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Buy new: $649.00 / Used from: $346.00
This camera has been replaced by the G10, but the G9 still costs more. The G9 is a compact camera that offers flexibility and creative control for when you want DSLR capabilities without lugging around the gear. It can also sync with strobes at really fast rates, via a sync cable. It uses the same battery as an XTi so it pulls double duty if you need an extra battery and/or charger for your XTi
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR CamerasCanon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,696.98 / Used from: $1,567.99
This beast is a fantastic lens. It's heavy, but it's an L-series. It's fast, it has IS and USM, and a great zoom range of 70 - 200mm. With the XTi's 1.6 conversion factored into the equation, we're talking about a maximum zoom range of 320mm. It also works with the Canon 1.4 and 2.0x magnifier attachments, which increases your range up to 640mm. That's ridiculous.
B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC FilterB+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter
Buy new: $152.72 / Used from: $139.99
For better landscape photography, and super-saturated colors, get the best circular polarizer filter you can find. It pays to buy the better filters here. Get one that will fit your largest lens and use stepup rings so that your smaller lenses can use the same filter. Note that circular polarizers work for digital cameras, whereas conventional polarizing filters will not work for digital cameras.
