From Library Journal
Freelance writer and speaker Rhodes (The Soul at Rest, Bethany, 1996) bases her narrative of Christ's final days, from Gethsemane to Calvary, on A.T. Robertson's Harmony of the Gospels (1950), historical accounts of the era, and medical investigation of death by crucifixion. Her recounting of each event is preceded by a meditative exercise and followed by a contemplative, prayerful response. Rhodes's narrative stirs the soul intensely, remains closely based on scripture, and, unlike other imaginative accounts, is neither too maudlin nor detached.

About the Author
Tricia McCary Rhodes knows the importance of stillness and quiet before the Lord. Her first book, the Gold Medallion finalist A Soul at Rest, dealt specifically with the need to spend time in reflective prayer before the Lord. In her newest book, Contemplating the Cross, Rhodes combines portions on reflective prayer with other devotional tools to create what she calls "a pilgrimage of prayer" through the last days of Jesus' life.
Rhodes has B.A. in Psychology from California Baptist College and received her Master's in Social Research from Texas Christian University. Having recently stepped down from a long-term position as Worship Coordinator at New Hope Church, Tricia is now devoting herself to full-time writing. Already she has published articles with Moody, Discipleship Journal, Pray Magazine and more.
Contemplating the Cross is a writing that grew out of Tricia's own personal spiritual walk. Touched with a desire to learn about what really took place in the final hours of Jesus' life, she began a journey of contemplation. "What I had thought would take a few weeks and prepare me for the Easter season," she says, "took a year and transformed my life."
Unique in its scope and original in presentation, Contemplating the Cross is an important book for Christians who need to stand in awe of the great love and suffering of Jesus. Many need the Cross to take deep root and see that an antiseptic vision of the crucifixion&one devoid of suffering or pain&does little for experiencing Jesus' awful and awesome sacrifice for his people.
Tricia's own service and ministries have taken her from Alaska to countries as varied as India, Bangladesh, and Lithuania. Whether sharing a feast of beaver feet with a village of Inuit or attending a prayer retreat with missionaries serving overseas, Tricia has felt a calling to serve the unreached. Tricia has also initiated a speaking ministry throughout the country on the topics dearest to her heart including encouraging people to spend more consistent time with God and explaining the importance of seeking the quiet rest promised by God.
She lives with her husband, Joe, in California. Tricia and her husband have two children and she is currently at work on her third book.

Contemplating the Cross
Slowly and deliberately Tricia McCrary Rhodes walks the reader through the passion of Christ from Gethemane to his resurrection. Prayerfully she causes the reader to contemplate the thoughts of Jesus and those whose paths he crossed on the way to his crucifixion. Her insight is remarkable and her speculations are kept within the context of the narratives of scripture. To the one with an open heart, the mystery of Christ's suffering for the sins of the world, is unveiled in this fresh conteplation and pilgrimage through scripture.
