This anecdotal history of the environmental movement traces what was a grass roots revolution from 1960 to 1989. The concept of environmentalism was rooted in conservation and ecology, and its adherents included zoologists, poets, engineers, mystics, public health nurses, "flower children," economists, bureaucrats, farmers, homemakers, demographers, professors, and students.
