Somewhat Disappointing
I have worn Lycra on my hips everyday for the past 11 years. I can wear a size smaller when they are on (no matter what brand). If there is any piece of clothing I know... it's this.
I was so excited when these came out. I ordered a couple of every style that Spanx makes. Unfortunately, none of them lasted very long. They lasted on average about 10 washings before tearing, ripping, etc.(2 pairs ripped within the first 3 washings.. and yes, even though these can't handle the washer well, some can on delicate hand wash mode w/ cold water.) Moreover, when you sit down... they tend to roll down the waist and hike up the leg just like many other brands do. So, you stand up and have to adjust. Also, they are not as binding as others and when the high "tummy control" rolled down (which happens within the 1st hour), it is very tight and hurts a little. So there you are in public wanting to yank down the legs because you can feel it bunching and trying to discretely pulling the top back up to your bra line. As you can imagine, pulling and yanking on your underwear in public isn't the most attractive thing to be caught doing... lol.
I have to also add that the slit for ease of using the restroom is totally not trustworthy. I have honestly not ever had the guts to use it. It's doesn't look like it would be successful or sanitary... so I'm out on that one.
Now, after saying all of that... I have to admit that there is not much better out there that I have found yet. They do make a big difference in how your clothes look (if you have adjusted lately!) So essentially, the job does get done... but at a high price and some discomfort.

Better than I expected
I've tried similar support products in the past and was disappointed with the fit, comfort, and performance. The Spanx Higher Power is great! Very comfortable, no rolling down or bunching up, and they do make me look smoother and slimmer in jeans and slacks. I ordered about a size larger than I really thought would fit me, and the fit is perfect. Another reviewer mentioned that she thought the Spanx products ran small, and I agree. Excellent product, worth the price!

Buy the right size
Many people have complained about the fit. I had the same problems (bunching of fat at the top and rolling down) until I bought the next bigger size. I too had the illusion of being a small. However, the medium was really where I needed to be. Please don't expect miracles but I sure do look a lot better in my clothes with these on.
