We all know from watching years of "American Idol" auditions that there are plenty of people out there who think they qualify as the next big music star. Now is there chance to step into the spotlight (at least of their living room) and prove their mettle. The American Idol Talent Challenge game lets all ages sing along with the performances on past Idol shows, be judged by their peers, and then hear actual comments from Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul based on the score.

The vocal mixer lets you sing along with the included DVD or another DVD of your choice.

The game consists of a vocal mixer unit that you plug directly into your TV, a DVD with 12 songs performed by American Idol finalists, and one microphone. There are multiple ways to sing along: first you choose the song, then you choose whether or not you want the lyrics to scroll Karaoke-style across the screen or not, then you decide if you want the Idol contestant to sing along with you or if you’d prefer to go solo. You even get to choose your "stage" setting -- backgrounds include fireworks, cityscapes, stages, and more -- and the mixer allows you have your voice treated with cool sound effects.

Once you’ve sung (and danced) your heart out, your audience has a chance to cast their vote on your performance. By pressing the numbers 1 (lowest) through 9 (highest) on the DVD player’s remote control, they’ll determine your overall score and the comments that Randy and Paula give. The judges’ comments are actual feedback that was given to an American Idol contestant after their live performance, which adds to the reality of the game. Even Ryan Seacrest is in on the fun. He hosts the game and helps keep things moving along.

The DVD that comes with Talent Challenge features 12 performances for you to sing along to, including Paris Bennet’s "Fever," Chris Daughtry’s "I Walk the Line," Kelly Clarkson’s "Respect," Bo Bice’s "Satisfaction," and eight other hits. Four additional DVDs in the genres of country, pop, love songs, and classic hits feature another 12 songs each and are available separately should you want to expand your repertoire. Plus, a great feature that the game doesn’t really promote, is that the vocal mixer allows you to talk and/or sing along with other DVDs. So you can pop in a concert DVD to sing backup with your favorite band, or slide in a Disney musical to sing along with the characters. There won’t be the Karaoke option to help you out with lyrics, but it does mean hours of additional entertainment value. Four AA batteries are required, but not included.

Disappointing song selection and song length
The songs offered are very short - we can only sing along with the last parts of the songs. Also, the review comments are very repetitive. We also wished we could skip some of the review steps, but that feature is not offered - you have to sit through all the reviews before you can sing again. It's an OK toy - needs more flexibility to be an outstanding toy.

Easy to set up, instructions were easy to follow. Worked well, but make sure that you have a TV with three input jacks. Santa delivered this to Grandma's house while we were there, but their TV wouldn't work with it. Our TV at home works fine, but only with the input jacks on the back of the set (the front ones - two input jacks - don't work for this toy).

I sent it back it was so bad!
This product is one of the worst games I have ever played. It was difficult to hook up to the TV because you have to have it run through your dvd player. The back of my dvd player is not all that easy to reach. The song choices are very few and it only had a portion of the songs to sing. It was not even a complete song. After playing it with my 9 year old daughter we packed it up and shipped it back. Don't waste your $. Even if you are a big Idol fan like my family, you will be very disappointed.

Fantastic Choice Toy
I am definitely a fan of this product. I gave one to my niece who is 13 and obsessed with it for her birthday. She says it is one of her best presents. And amazon ships fast!
