Good lock with a stiff combination.4
This is a heavy duty lock, big enough to go around two bikes, or lock your bike to a parking-meter. It is definately stronger/heavier than most U-locks I've seen, so that alone should make your bike a less attractive target (important since a lot of bikes "dissapear" in Santa Monica). In adddition, there is a cover that slides over the combo, disguising that it is a combination lock and protecting the numbers from the elements.

The instructions for re-setting the combination were fairly straight-forward IF you read the instructions. One thing it took me a momment to figure out was that you have to spin the little knob (right next to the combination) up about 2/3 of a turn, until it stops and a second knob appears. One downside to how the combination is set is that the setting-knobs are right next to the numbers, which means that it could (unlikely) be possible to change your combination by mistake.

The combination numbers and knobs on this lock are are very stiff... though the numbers did loosen a little when I played with them. I will probably end up leaving the first number unchanged when locking my bike, since it is the hardest to reach. After using it for a week I'm starting to get the hang of the stiff numbers, and even my girlfriend (who's hands, thankfully, aren't as strong as mine) is able to lock & unlock the bikes.

The lock comes with a good looking mount, but the size of this lock makes it impossible to mount it anywhere on my bike unless I take off my rear-rack or water-bottle-holder. It does, however, fit just fine in my basket. The included cable lock is heavier than most cable-locks, and offers the obvious advantage of being able to tie up to more and bigger things.

My sum-up: This is a strong lock with some minor disadvantages which are overcome by the benefit of never needing to carry (or loose) the key.

great for every application5
This lock works great because I can use just the U-lock, just the cable lock, or both depending on my situation.
