Systematic tripods are the strongest, and the most stable available, and they also offer unsurpassed flexibility. This modular system can be quickly transformed between different configurations depending on the specific needs of a shoot. Choosing the carbon fiber version means you always have the ideal base model for both indoor and outdoor shooting. The new generation of Systematic tripods features Gitzo Carbon 6X tubing, Anti Leg Rotation system, and the new G-Lock locking system. Thanks to these innovations, the tripods are now lighter, faster to operate, and sturdier than ever. Carbon 6X Systematic tripods come with a convenient anti-dust bag for storage and packing. Systematic tripods have a unique ultra-wide top platform that guarantees an incredibly stable base for any professional high performance equipment. This platform can be removed and replaced with other accessories, making this a fully customizable system. All Systematic tripods are supplied with a flat top plate. A Systematic tripod can quickly be transformed into a professional video support by means of 75 mm and 100 mm half ball adapters. Systematic tripods can be fitted with large diameter, rapid or geared center columns. Generous diameters maintain system stability at any height. • Brand: Gitzo
  • Model: GT3540LS
  • Dimensions: 5.25 pounds

Features

  • ALR - A new Anti Leg Rotation system, which means the tripod can be opened in less than 15 seconds. Simply loosen all the twist locks on each leg at the same time, then pull the leg down and tighten the locks individually.
  • G-Lock: The Gitzo leg locking system has been completely redesigned in order to achieve a 20% increase in rigidity, faster operation and stronger, safer locking. G-Lock's special design also provides a "gravity lock" effect: the higher the load applied vertically to the leg, the stronger the lock.
  • Ground Level Set: This feature allows you to remove the center column to save weight and get the camera closer to the ground. Uses existing components: the upper disc with reversible 1/4 - 3/8 bolt and the column hook assembly.

Gitzo 3540LS5
I have used a Manfrotto 443 (Carbon One) tripod with a 128RC head. I used this for my Swarovski scope and it worked fine. However, when I tried using it for my newly aquired camera gear it was clearly not up to the job. After reading about alternatives I decided to go for a Gitzo 3540 but, being in UK, had no oportunity to see one so it was all based on reports and on what my needs were. Well, I am pleased to announce that this is a superb piece of kit; utterly faultless and extremely well made. The 4 legs are quicker to set up than the 3 of my Manfrotto and it is much more rigid. The Markin M20 ballhead I have mounted on top makes things even better and I can use both the scope and my D200 with Nikkor 200-400 F/4 lens on it equally well. This set up is so strong and rigid, I can't imagine what additional benefits a Gitzo 5 series might bring as I am sure they would all be outweighed by the increased weight.

Superb Tripod5
Light, sturdy, well-made, easy to set up. This is a superb
tripod; as good as it gets, in my opinion.

The Gitzo GT3540LS is the final choice for me5
I traded up from a Manfrotto 3021 Pro because of load capacity (39 pounds); overall weight of the tripod itself (3.8 pounds); the size when folded up (less than 22 inches long); and the ease of use in set-up and break-down. The Gitzo is an engineering marvel, is rock steady and even with four sections is faster to set-up than the Manfrotto. It has no center column (although as an option you can add one) allowing for being right at ground level which is great for macro shooting. I also use it for my spotting scope when birding and when combined with a Really Right Stuff BH 55, I can easily carry it into the field, set it up quickly and lock onto birds and track them easily. Finally with a heavier lens like a 70-200, it is unmovable unless I choose to move it. When I finally can afford a longer lens, the GT3540LS will doubtless carry the weight with ease. This tripod was well worth the extra expense and I don't imagine I'll ever need another one.
