The Complete EMI Recordings 1946-1984, Vol. 1: Orchestral [Box Set]The Complete EMI Recordings 1946-1984, Vol. 1: Orchestral [Box Set]
Buy new: $131.97 / Used from: $128.97
This list is getting expensive. If you are going to shell out for the Bruckner set, you may as well get his complete EMI recordings. All of these recordings are good, and some remain unsurpassed, especially in regards to Sibelius' symphonies - recordings the composer himself praised. An outstanding bargain.
Karajan 100th - Volume 2, Opera and VocalsKarajan 100th - Volume 2, Opera and Vocals
Buy new: $171.98 / Used from: $127.63
Karajan was at home in the opera house as well as the concert hall. Great performances here by the leading singers of the day. An outstanding bargain.
Karajan: Legendary Decca RecordingsKarajan: Legendary Decca Recordings
Buy new: $54.99 / Used from: $34.99
Includes Karajan's first recording of "Also Sprach Zarathustra," the version used in Stanley Kubrick's film, "2001, A Space Odyssey." Also includes Karajan's best recordings of the Tchaikovsky ballet suites, as well as some of his best Mozart and Haydn performances, much lighter and more natural than his later DG remakes.
Karajan: Symphony EditionKarajan: Symphony Edition
Buy used from: $80.00
Includes the complete Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky symphonies, as well as misc. Mozart symphonies, and Haydn's Paris and London Symphonies. An excellent bargain even if the set was by an unknown artist, let alone Karajan. Try and order it from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de for a better price than in The States.
Ludwig van Beethoven: 9 SymphonienLudwig van Beethoven: 9 Symphonien by Gundula Janowitz
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $13.59
The Beethoven cycle that started it all. Like it or not, this set defined Beethoven performance practice in such a profound way that everything that came afterward is either a refinement of it, or a reaction to it.
Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan / KarajanStrauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan / Karajan
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.18
Strauss by a conductor who knew him. The definitive version of Also Sprach Zarathustra.
Strauss: Four Last Songs / Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic OrchestraStrauss: Four Last Songs / Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.64
Not my favorite Four Last Songs, but Karajan's Strauss is excellent and worth having.
Strauss: Metamorphosen/Tod und Verklarung (Metamorphoses/Death and Transfiguration)Strauss: Metamorphosen/Tod und Verklarung (Metamorphoses/Death and Transfiguration) by Strauss
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $12.37
The most moving version of the Metamorphosen I have ever heard, by the man who made the first recording of this piece back in 1947, when Strauss was still alive. People who find Karajan's interpretations emotionally distant or empty must never have heard this.
Der Ring des Nibelungen / Karajan / Berlin PhilharmonicDer Ring des Nibelungen / Karajan / Berlin Philharmonic by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau
Buy new: $181.98 / Used from: $111.27
A clean, precise recording, with almost chamber-like clarity.
BoleroBolero
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $3.99
Karajan's best recording of "Pictures." The last movement has an unparalleled serenity instead of bombast, and that is a compelling, original approach. The recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the EMI box is also good. Avoid the 1960's DG recording despite its popularity with critics (see my review).
Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht, Pelleas und Melisande / Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic OrchestraSchoenberg: Verklärte Nacht, Pelleas und Melisande / Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Buy used from: $6.85
Early Schoenberg, played with the rich, full string tone that Romantic works require.
Schoenberg, Berg, Webern: Orchestral Works / KarajanSchoenberg, Berg, Webern: Orchestral Works / Karajan
Buy used from: $6.48
Schoenberg, Berg and Webern, though serialists, were basically Romantic composers. Yes, they used a new and innovative language to state their ideas, but their ideas are fundamentally Romantic ones. Karajan does not lose sight of this fact.
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastiqe [Germany]Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastiqe [Germany]
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $3.40
Check Amazon.de, Amazon.co.uk, or even directly from DG for better pricing. Wish this was in the Symphony Edition, but it ain't.

Should have been in the Symphony Edition.
Mahler: Symphony No. 5 / Karajan, Berliner PhilharmonikerMahler: Symphony No. 5 / Karajan, Berliner Philharmoniker

Should have been in the Symphony Edition
Mahler: Symphony No. 6 / Rückert Lieder / KindertotenliederMahler: Symphony No. 6 / Rückert Lieder / Kindertotenlieder
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $10.96
Should have been in the Symphony Edition.
Gustav Mahler: Symphonie No. 9Gustav Mahler: Symphonie No. 9
Buy new: $33.98 / Used from: $19.98
My new favorite Mahler 9. Karajan actually finds humor and absurdity in the Rondo - Burlesque third movement. Mahler should not always be dry and angst-ridden, even in this, one of his bleaker symphonies. Karajan's Mahler reminds you of Mahler's place in line with Brahms, Bruckner and the other late Romantics. Yes, Mahler was eccentric, but not as eccentric as Bernstein would have you believe.
Respighi: Fontane di Roma, Pini di Roma, etc / KarajanRespighi: Fontane di Roma, Pini di Roma, etc / Karajan

A great recording of these pieces.
