Starscream, renowned traitor and Deception malcontent, is one of the more out-looking robots of the Voyager Class. Starscreams F-22 Raptor transforms into a bulky apelike robot topped by a bell-shaped semi-insectoid-head. Starscreams thick, blunt arms are equipped with talon-rimmed revolving missile-launcher appendages. Despite Starscreams bizarre and monstrous structural design, he boasts a pretty high level of articulation. The movie version Starscream is described as being as vain and as treacherous as his memorable cartoon incarnation. Plying his secret agenda with various acts of subversion and duplicity, Starscream is prissily disdainful of Megatrons tastes for aggression and direct conflict. Leading a supposed mission to recover the missing Megatron, Starscream yearns to permanently rule the Decepticons, though his attempts to crystallize his position are countermined by the Decepticons, such as Blackout, who remain loyal to Megatron.

From the Manufacturer
Leading the hunt for the AllSpark during the absence of MEGATRON on Earth has given STARSCREAM a taste for command. He has experienced firsthand the brutality that allows MEGATRON to maintain control over his DECEPTICON legions. It is a style of leadership that STARSCREAM takes to with gusto, punishing disobedience without mercy and rewarding success only with a narrowed eye and threatening gesture. He craves ultimate control, and looks forward to the day when MEGATRON makes the mistake that allows STARSCREAM the opportunity to slip a jagged shard of steel between his processor clusters.

I've owned this for 6 hours and already shot myself 5 times
Although I'd side with the Autobots any day, Starscream has always been my favorite character. While I was disappointed at his diminished role in the film, I still jumped at the chance to buy the new toy.
There is one problem I'd like to point out: As a character, Starcream's treachery is legendary. The toy is not much different. The missile launchers are on a hair trigger, and it's not immediately clear at first where the triggers are until you accidentally fire a missile. This has happened to me while I've been transforming him. As an added bonus, the missiles are brownish-grey in color, which makes attempting to locate them a delight.
Still, in either his robot or F-22 form Starscream is a delight to play with. I'm almost 25 and I nearly reverted back to a 5 year-old, about ready to run around the house and make jet noises. However in transforming into his robot form it took me nearly 10 minutes to figure out the instructions. On the other hand, your child will likely approach this toy with more gusto.
Once you get past these two idiosyncrasies, this, as most transformers toys, should capture the imagination of the user. It's a great nostalgia kick for older people who remember the cartoon, but should be enjoyable to children as well.
Great toy, if you can get past the redesign
My infatuation with Transformers has been rekindled with all the hype from the new movie. There's been a lot of criticism about not staying true to the G1 characters, the most notable being Starscream. I really hated his look until I saw it in motion in the movie trailers. And now, after purchasing this toy, I gotta say that it's really grown on me and suspect it will be popular with a whole new generation of kids.
PROS:
- Really inventive and unique transformation sequence.
- Nice colors...a close representation to the movie version (unlike Voyager Ratchet)
- Relatively good articulation.
CONS:
- Transformed him only a few times and joints are getting pretty loose. Not sure if he'd be able to stand after a few months with a hyper-active kid.
- The tail fins can come off pretty easily if you're not careful but you can snap them back in place easily.
- Paint is chipping already (and I'm pretty careful)
- The buttons that fire the missles are pretty sensitive..make sure the guns aren't loaded when transforming. Why doesn't he have hands?
- Some enthusiasts have complained that Starscream's head and limbs aren't hidden well enough in his alt-mode ("plane mode") but it doesn't bother me.
OVERALL:
If you can accept the fact that the filmmakers wanted to do a complete revamp of a beloved G1 character, then you'll probably like this toy. After playing around with it for a bit, I have a new appreciation for "Monkey-scream"...the transformation is pretty creative. If they stay true to the essence of the character, I can see him winning over old and new fans alike.

Great Toy! - 5+ age rating may be stretching it
This is a great toy! When ordering, I didn't expect it to be as cool as it turned out to be. The transformation is quite good, and it looks great both as a jet and as a robot (although the legs are a little small). Having the missiles shoot when turning the wheels is a nice touch.
My coworkers (computer programmers) had quite a bit of fun playing with it, and teasing anyone who couldn't transform it since it's rated for ages 5+. Actually that 5+ age rating seems like a stretch - I don't know many young kids who would be able to transform fully back and forth without becoming frustrated and/or breaking it. Although, I do remember when I was a lego obsessed kid, definitely my biggest complaint with the original transformers was they were not complicated enough.
Kudos to hasbro for making this one more intricate. I'm hoping the rest of the transformer toys are on par with this one =)
