Van Damme's fourth film, but the first to feature him in a prominent role: opposite Kurt McKinney ("General Hospital"), Van Damme plays a lethal thug hired by a crime syndicate to take out McKinney's father. Directed by Corey Yuen ("The Transporter"). Largely due to its use of "Brucesploitation", the film made only $5 million, but has since become a cult favorite.

Van Damme plays a KGB agent determined to stop the retrieval of a top-secret laser device by the film's protagonist (Sho Kusugi, "Enter The Ninja"). Directed by Eric Karson ("The Octagon").

When his brother is paralyzed by a vicious muay thai champion, Kurt Sloane (Van Damme) learns this ancient martial art to gain redemption. Co-stars Dennis Chan ("Kickboxer" 2-3) and directed by Mark DiSalle ("The Perfect Weapon") and David Worth ("Lady Dragon").

Van Damme portrays an ex-detective going undercover as an inmate to investigate a series of mysterious deaths in California's Harrison State Prison. Directed by Deran Sarafini ("Terminal Velocity"). Also stars Robert Guillaume ("Benson") and Cynthia Gibb ("Gypsy").

Also stars fellow action hero Dolph Lundgren ("Rocky IV"); Van Damme and he play dead soldiers reanimated as a special military project to create the perfect fighting machines. Though detested by critics, "Soldier" became one of Van Damme's most sucessful features - topping $102 million in the box office.

The first American film to be directed by John Woo ("Face/Off"): Van Damme plays a thug hired by an out-of-city woman to protect her while she searches for missing father...who was killed by a hunt-happy mercenary group. Also stars Lance Henriksen ("Aliens"), Yancy Butler ("Witchblade"), and Arnold Vosloo ("The Mummy"). Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man" trilogy) served as executive producer.

Van Damme's most acclaimed film, in which he plays a time-travelling "Time Encforcement Agent" haunted by the desire to undo the murder of his wife (Mia Sara, "Legend"). Directed by Peter Hyams ("2010"). Also stars Ron Silver ("Ali"). Despite mixed reviews, the film made nearly $135 million, making it the most successful feature Van Damme has ever starred in.

Caught in a hostage crisis in the Civic Center, a disgraced firefighter (Van Damme) must save the audience, his daughter, and himself before a deranged terrorist (Powers Booth, "Sin City") blows up the arena. Also stars Raymond Barry ("Rapid Fire"). Often derided as a "Die Hard"-ripoff, the film made signifigantly less than Van Damme's previous pictures: a trend that he would be unable to slow...

In the first American film to be directed by Ringo Lam ("The Victim"), Van Damme plays a French policeman involved in a murder case...the victim of which looks exactly like himself. Also stars Natasha Henstridge ("Species"). Though a decidedly better-than-average film for a Van Damme film, it again made less money than its predecessor.

Van Damme teams with Lela Rochon ("Waiting to Exhale") and Rob Schneider ("Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo") to save the west from dangerous counterfeit merchandise. Directed by Tsui Hark. After being bashed by critics, the film made little over $40 million - scarcely earning back its budget.

The sequel to one of his most successful films proved a low point in Van Damme's career, and became his last film to be featured in US theaters, to-date. Also starring Michael Jai White ("Spawn") and Bill Goldberg, the movie endured a critical bashing and made only about $14 million, making it Van Damme's least successful film since "Kickboxer.

To combat a mother-murdering serial killer (Van Damme), a clone of the murderer is created to help understand the real criminal. Also stars Michael Rooker ("Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer") and Catherine Dent ("Jaded"). Directed by Ringo Lam. Van Damme's nomination for the DVD Exclusive award of "Best Actor" marks this the first official commendation for his skills as a thespian.

After a NATO operative (Van Damme) tracks down a terrorist who's stolen a deadly biological weapon (Laura Harring, "Sunset Beach"), he must contend with a band of hijackers looking to get their hands on it as he transports the prisoner by train. Also stars Tomas Arana ("The Bourne Supremacy"). Directed by Bob Misiorowski ("Blood of the Innocent").

An ex-gangster (Van Damme) seeks revenge on the Triad lord responsible for murdering his wife and kidnapping his children. Also stars Simon Yam ("Election") and Phillip Tan ("Bloodsport 2"). Though set to be directed by Ringo Lam, responsibility was overtaken by Phillippe Martinez ("Citizen Verdict").

Van Damme plays an army veteran assigned to protect a heavyweight boxing champion from a vengeful rap music mogul (Viv Leacock, "Intern Academy"). Also stars Razaaq Adoti ("Resident Evil: Apocalypse") and Vivica A. Fox ("Independence Day"). The film was originally intended as a project for fellow action star Steven Seagal, but became Van Damme's when Seagal turned it down.

Van Damme plays a heroin-addicted cop who, after almost being killed in a gunfight, reforms to save his wife (Selina Giles, "Cross Eyed Waltz") from a notorious drug kingpin (Stephen Rea, "The Crying Game"). The film was praised by fans and online critics, citing Van Damme's performance as a drug-addict as particularly convincing.

A loosely-biographical drama about the man behind the action hero: the movie follows Van Damme as he returns to his home country after a series of financial and personal problems...but apparently no matter where he goes, he cannot shake his reputation. Though an unconventional vehicle, the movie quickly won critical acclaim and is being labeled by many as Van Damme's best movie ever.
