Ok for frequent visitors, bad for the first or second visit
I just returned fm Barcelona and brought 5 guidebooks (Fodors See It Barcelona, Frommers 24 Great Walks in Barcelona, Frommers Barcelona day by day, and Time Out Barcelona, and EasyMap Barcelona) because none of them really filled the one-stop-shop I was looking for.
This book was one of the worst. I had high hopes since the Time Out series is supposed to be good, but this one didnt work for several reasons. But first the plusses. It did a good job covering the major sights and had some good tips, and its probably he best for nightlife. (Tip, if its the current events and nightlife you want, get the local time-out magazine since its more up to date and relevant).
But the overall tone of the book seemed to me to be aloof, bordering on arrogant. The book had no street index on the map, and the maps were multipage, and often didnt line up across the page. One of the most important maps, the Metro Map, had an entire subway line obliterated within the fold. The maps also did a very bad job of showing which streets were for cars, and which were pedestrian-only.
My biggest gripe was that since there was only one set of maps, they had to put all the restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels, major landmarks on the same map, and identified them by number. So, if you wanted to know what restaurants were in the area, you had to first look on the map, then figure out which of the little dots meant restaurants versus cafes & tapas bars, remember the number, then find it in the restaurant section, etc. The back and fourth flipping became maddening quite quickly.
The bottom line is that this book got left in the room over the much heavier seemingly lead-lined Fodors See It Barcelona and the Barcelona Day by Day.
My recommendation is that if you have only 3 or fewer days in BCN, get Frommers Barcelona Day by Day. If more, then also get the Frommers 24 walks, which we used quite a bit, but only as a supplement.
Here is my summary reviews
Frommers Barcelona day by day - 4*
See It Barcelona - 3*
Frommers 24 great walks in Barcelona - 5*
Time Out Barcelona - 2*
EasyMap Barcelona - 1*
Excellent for clubbing and eating out not so good for anything else
VERY DISAPPOINTING! I brought this guide with me for a trip to barcelona and was very frustrated with it. It provides very little information about actual tourist attractions and more about shops, restaurans and clubs(3/4 of the book about shops).
It is also very disorganized and you have to be re-reading paragraphs to find the sentence where they barely mentioned a museum or market. It provides very few museum listings and less few about markets, churches or parcs.
If you want to know the best clothes shop or one of the most trendy restaurants in Barcelona this is your guide, if you are like me who actually wants to get recommendations, itineraries or walking guides this is not for you. I bought a lonely planet guide.
