Love it!
This shipped real fast! I got it the next day. It works like a dream. We use it for a tandem kayak and it's so great. It takes no time to load it on and get going. This is a life saver because my arms were so tired after being out in the kayak I couldn't pick the kayak up and carry it all the way back. Now we just lift up, roll the carrier under, strap it and that's that! We can go on our way. It works so good.
A way to kayak without breaking your back
The first mission of this hauler was to get three kayaks weighing between 30-60 pounds from the parking lot to the beach about 500 yards away, along with the gear and coolers for a day of paddling on the lake. Putting the kayaks on top of this carrier and in turn loading the boats with gear made the launch portage three easy rolls to the water and we were paddling fast and easy.
The 'kickstand' really only holds the unit upright to get the boat on and strapped. It's only about 15" wide so a 12' boat on it balancing is an accomplishment under ideal conditions, much less on a beach of rocks or sand. It works to get the boat on and strapped and then you can use the bow or stern of the boat as a tripod point.
The strap is a necessary piece to hold the boat in place during transport and that's why it's docked one star.
The strap is a common cam-type 1" nylon cargo strap with 1" vinyl coated heavy steel cargo hooks for a job that velcro could do. The weight and design of the hooks makes the strap tend to fall off of one side while trying to attach the other side. There are no special strap eyelets. That part could have really been designed better and I imagine most end users will wind up using other straps with these wheels.
The second mission was even more appreciated than the first, returning the boats to the truck after a day of paddling. With arms of rubber and a full day of fun in the sun, having these wheels really comes in handy. The trip back always seems to be the hard one. This carrier makes it a bit easier.
Well built, but could fold better
Bought this to keep from straining my back carrying my 60 plus lb Folbot Greenland to and from the water and my truck.
As I keep the Folbot assembled most of the time, the side benefit of being able to move it in and out of my garage is great. It will stow in the front seat area of my kayak, but my springer spaniel is not excited about sharing her space. Also, the strap retaining system, as another reviewer pointed out, could use some more thought and better "locating" hardware.
As my favorite campground on a bluff overlooking Lake Superior has a trail, of sorts, that goes down to the rocky shoreline, 300 feet below, the large wheels are needed and work very well. Hauling it back up the steep incline solo would have been unthinkable before I bought this, but is now achievable, which makes this a great investment for my terrain.
In summary, it does the job very well with bigger and heavier boats, but taking it along with you on a voyage looks to be a challenge unless you are willing to surrender a fair amount of space. If the cart's boat support bed could be made in two pieces that would telescope and ball snap together, like a salmon landing net, this could more easily stow under decks.
