Product Description

Brazil, with 150 million people in an area roughly the size of the USA, is more a continent than a country. Few countries have greater variety to offer the traveller: the metropolis of Sao Paulo, a South American New York, Rio, the rolling "pampas" of the south, the rivers and forests of Amazonia and the tropical coastline and harsh interior of the northeast. This guide is more than just a list of what to see and where to stay, it also sets into contemporary context this array of physical, historical, cultural and popular diversity. From river travel on the Amazon, to how to get the most out of "Carnaval", from colonial churches to Brazilian music, this guide informs, advises and celebrates Brazil.

Unfortunately Lacking1
I am a big fan of Eyewitness Travel and buy there books for every place I go to visit. Most people familiar with the brand are aware of its upsides, great pictures, maps and recommendations of where to go.

Although this is a country guide, the majority of people that will visit South America will visit Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. These places are unfortunately lacking the usual eyewitness travel detail and do not break each city down into sections as most of their other books do, including the one for Argentina (which does a great job for Buenos Aires)

I had 5 days to spend in Sao Paulo, and found the book gave me very few indications of where to go aside from a list of sights. I did not get a good feeling like i had seen the city properly, rather had a piecemeal perspective of a few things to do for the first day or two and not much else for the remainder. I am disappointed because I am a huge fan of eyewitness's other books, but this one disappointed.

I am aware that this is a country guide, however it should still give extra attention to the locations the majority of people will visit.

A beautiful, comprehensive overview of Brazil, but some maps are lacking in details. I always have liked "Eyewitness" for their wonderful maps ... however maps, especially for Rio de Janiero could be easier to use. This is a heavy book to carry traveling .... perhaps should have been published as two volumes?

Eyewitness is the BEST!5
I just picked this up at our local Costco. It was $18 there - but you never know if it will be in stock or not so I'd stick with Amazon. We are going to Brazil in August and will definitely take this with us. We've used several of the Eyewitness books in the past for our European travels and they've never let us down and have always been better than the other travel books that we've picked up along the way. The graphics are perfect, we love the blown up street maps of the popular tourist destinations, and they are filled with tons of helpful tips! Definitely a win-win situation for all!
