Product Description

This book covers the famous Arctic archipelago (named Spitsbergen when discovered by the Dutch in 1596, but now more commonly referred to as Svalbard - the Viking word for 'cold coast'). On one side there is a clear and uncluttered map of the archipelago, with useful annotations; on the reverse there are excellent biographical summaries of 27 noted explorers (including Horatio Nelson who came here as a 14 year old midshipman!) plus brief descriptions and colour photographs of the more common plants, invertebrates, birds and mammals.

Customer Reviews

Caveat Emptor1
Totally other than I expected. This is a cheap, casual-tourist oriented product, which disappointed me greatly. I feel mislead, conned and had, at great expense, I might add. This will make me far more cautious of buying through Amazon!

Best map I could find of Spitsbergen.5
I am going on a circumnavigation of Spitsbergen archepelago in June/July, 2009, and needed a good reference map. This exceeded my expectations as the map shows not only details of all the islands and their protected areas (park, reserves) with a few general photos, but also on the obverse, detailed info on the explorers, birds, mammals, plants, and even a few invertebrates with photos. A godsend when you are on a ship.

Decent, not perfect, but it's what's available4
The map is pretty decent, but the details fade significantly as you travel inland on the map. There are some better maps available, but not in English. This is good for planning ahead of time, but be sure to also look into the Norwegian maps before you land.
