A Fantastic Resource for Those New to the Area
I was given a copy when I first moved to DC, and now it is dog-eared and worn. Book is excellent for learning the various areas in DC and its nearby suburbs, and has extremely detailed maps full of information. For about the first six months I lived in DC, I constantly had this book tucked into my purse. Navigating by its detailed maps was a great alternative to printing out online directions every time I wanted to meet friends for drinks at a new bar, or see a new museum.
But, the title really is what it sounds like. There's no super-secret insider tips here, just great, straightforward information to help you pick where to live, where to dine, where to mail your letters, where to check out library books, and more.
Great resource on DC
As the name suggests, this is not the best guide for someone interested in making a quick visit to the national monuments. What it is, however, is an outstanding resource for anyone who lives in the District, or for repeat visitors (I live in central Virginia and go to Washington frequently). It includes neighborhood-by-neighborhood street maps and lists of restaurants, as one would expect, but also provides a wealth of information not typically found in guides, such as the location of gas stations, parking, copy shops, and pharmacies in each neighborhood. It also provides detailed sections on each of the city's universities and on little-known services like the cut-rate cross-country busses operating from Chinatown. I'll be giving a copy to my brother-in-law who will soon be moving to DC.
It's OK - But Truly Not for Tourists
So, if you are moving to the DC area and want to get to know the neighborhoods; maybe this would be a good resource for you. The maps are good. Other than that, don't look for much description/insight, etc. There is more information about post offices and libraries than there is anything touristy - thus perhaps, the title of the book. If you are coming to DC as a tourist, stick to the traditional fare - this doesn't have any inside secrets. I would look to Washingtonian Magazine for the 100 best restaurants and a recently published issue of the 75 best bars for more insider insight - it should be free on their web site.
