About the Author
Perhaps it's because she was born under the sign of Aquarius, but Hilary Nangle has always had a passion for the coast. The ocean has been a constant in her life since she first watched the sun rise out of the Atlantic while she was waiting for the school bus. In college, Hilary discovered her love for writing. She briefly pursued a graduate degree in Middle East studies, but when she realized that the career path wouldn't include Maine she dropped out and became a ski and white-water rafting bum. That introduced her to Maine's back roads and offbeat attractions, and her sense of wanderlust was ignited. When she tired of her parents asking when she was going to get a real job, she drew on her writing strength, working as an editor for the North American Pro Ski tour, managing editor for a food trade publication, features editor for a daily newspaper, and now as a freelance writer/editor. She edits the state's tourism magazine, Maine Invites You; has contributed to numerous magazines, newspapers, and dozens of guidebooks; and is a travel expert for a local television show. In 2003, she won a Harold Hirsch award for magazine writing. She never tires of exploring Maine, always seeking out the offbeat and quirky. To her husband's dismay, she inherited her grandmother's shopping gene, and can't pass a used bookstore, artisans' gallery, crafts fair, or antiques shop without browsing. She's equally curious about food, and has never met a lobster she didn't like. Hilary grew up in Greater Portland, but she's been migrating up the coast ever since, and now calls the Mid-Coast home. She lives with her husband, photographer Tom Nangle, and an oversized dog, Zack, both of whom share her passions for coastal walks and Maine-made ice cream.

Guide to the Beautiful Maine Coast5
After spending last summer in southern Maine, I was delighted to see this book. It provides information such as travel strategies and touring itineraries. The author lives on the mid-coast, but grew up around Portland.
You know the format for these handbooks means you get solid information on an area. I'm looking forward to another summer in Maine where I'll see so much more with this handbook to guide me.

excellent helper5
The Monn Handbook Coastal Maine was invaluable in planning and during our Sept. trip to ME. We used the info to make reservations at motels and restaurants and we were never dissapointed. It also included excellent craft shop recommendations and places to see that were really off the beaten path. I would recommend this guide book for anyone planning a trip to ME.

Visiting Coastal Maine....5
Hilary Nangle's enthusiastic guide to "Coastal Maine" captures the essence of what is still the relatively unspoiled and beautiful coastline between Kittery and Eastport. The roots of settlement in Maine may go back to the earliest days of European exploration in North America, but the coastline itself is the star here. From the expansive beaches south of Portland to the shopping mecca of L.L. Bean in Freeport to the magnificently rocky Acadia National Park to the remote towns and villages by the Canadian border, Coastal Maine has much to entertain.

This Moon Handback is a useful mixture of maps, photographs, travel narrative and practical information. Nangle divides the coastline into seven segments: The Southern Coast, Greater Portland, Mid-Coast Region, Penobscot Bay, Blue Hill Peninsula and Deer Isle, Acadia Region, and the Down East Coast. In each segment, she explores the tourist highlights, entertainment possibilities, shopping, accomodations, and dining. Sidebar items address unusual features such as the tremendous tidal range in Eastern Maine or the unique accent of Downeast Mainers. The guide comes in a compact and easy to use format and includes lists of useful websites for further research.

"Moon Handbooks Coastal Maine" is very highly recommended as a planning and traveling resource for those headed for Downeast Maine.
