Lea Salonga: On Her Own
This is the second volume of the live recording of the concert Lea Salonga did in the late 90's in the Philippines. Maybe you should get the Volume 1 first or ideally get both to better appreciate the flow of the concert.
The albums opens with her trademark "On my Own" from Les Mis. Her interpretation is sweeter and less assertive in this version than her interpretation from the Tenth Anniversary Concert (TAC) of Les Mis recording. I prefer the beginning part of her interpretation in this version compared to TAC because it is more subdued and sweeter but I prefer the more powerful, exciting and stronger end of her TAC version. Both were great renditions.
She also sang a lovely version of "You Must Love Me". She expressed her desire to someday play Eva Peron on stage. She also raved about how much she loved the song. I never really noticed the beauty of the song until I listened to her version.
She mentioned how much she loved Barbra Streisand and she then sang a medley of her songs. She started with "The Way We Were" and ended the medley with a beautifully controlled belt of the last note of "People". Another highlight was "The Journey", it's a song from her seft-titled debut album released in the early 90's. Video clips and photos of some of the milestones in her career (winning the Tony and Olivier, Miss Saigon clips, Annie etc.) were shown in the background as she sang the song.
She ended the concert with "One Voice". And she sang it really well. There's always an inherent sweetness in her voice and when she combines it with vocal power, she just soars. Her voice is so versatile she can be so sweet and soft but she can also be strong and in control.
She sang "Tomorrow" as her encore, a song that was associated with her quite persistently because Annie was her breakthrough role in the Philippines.
You will definitely enjoy this recording if you're a fan of Lea Salonga. There's also a video of this concert available.
