It is like a compendium of all the brochures you'll be inundated with once you get to NZ--the flashy pro photos, etc. This is a PLANNING book...once you get to NZ you won't need it, you'll need DETAILS like prices, hours of operation, or good "getting there" directions...all of which this guidebook lacks.

Buy new: $18.21 / Used from: $14.02 I personally feel that Footprint does the best job of the major books at featuring the very things you are going to NZ to experience--the free natural places. that said, my book is still way better at this. But, i like and respect Footprint.

Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.16 There's footage in this surf movie of the boys heading to New Zealand in 1965. You'll recognize Piha, Raglan, Ahipara...as well as road scenes of Huka Falls and Mud pool.
The NZ stuff is towards the end at minute 117.

Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $10.95 A much less "feel-good" movie--more of a "feel-bad" movie about Maori culture and its clash with modern NZ. This movie is a bit brutal--don't expect a Whale Rider type story of uplift here.

The free Hostel guide you'll find everywhere in NZ. This free pamphlet has the killer info that will actually help...all from people who have actually STAYED at the hostels....as opposed to the info in those big thick guidebooks listed above.

This is a great folding map with one island on one side, the other on the other. It has lots of icons for natural attractions. It makes a nice poster for after your trip also, when you are back home and trying to explain to your friends all the stuff you saw and where it was.
