The author's flight to freedom from Soviet occupied Lithuania at the end of World War II paralleled my own family's. My parents too came to the United States accompanied by a four year old daughter--my older sister and the photograph on the book jacket resembles our own family...Reading the book made me proud to be a Lithuanian-American having grown up speaking the Lithuanian language.

A heartwarming book written about a special time in Lithuania, between the two World Wars, when life was good and living sweet! As the first in my family to have been born in the United States, it helped me understand the world from which my own parents came. It is a sort of "GONE WITH THE WIND" of that time in Lithuania and a personal treasure for me to own.

My mother,who was born in Lithuania, found out about this fascinating book in the Lithuanian language newspaper DRAUGAS and later in the English language magazine LITHUANIAN HERITAGE. She was so enthralled by it that she recommended to me that I read it. The book indeed is a REAL treasure and I would highly recommend it to both historian and linguist alike.
