The Best Nationwide Road Atlas
The Michelin Road Atlas is an outstanding product. The format of the maps is very readable. There used to be a company called Gousha Chek-Chart, an L.A. Times owned company, that printed maps for Chevron and Texaco. When that company disbanded I was disappointed as the Rand McNally format is difficult to read, but has often been the only map available. McRand Nally is what I call them, consistently mediocre.
What is so good about the format Michelin uses. First, county boundaries and their names are easy to find. Second, public land, such as National Parks, National Forests, National Wildlife Refuges, state parks and state forests, as well as Indian reservations are shown very clearly. Third, highways are shown well. It is easy to distinguish Interstates, U.S. Highways, State Highways, and local roads from each other. It is easy to find the highway's number. Exit numbers are easy to find. Fourth, major points of interest, such as museums, notable land features, and National Historic Districts are shown and are very easy to find. Fifth, the extend of urban development is clearly shown for each city. Sixth, the more detailed city map boundaries are clearly shown, negating the need to look them up if the detailed map does not encompass the area you are interested in. Lastly, all the needed information is there and easy to find without a lot of clutter. Somehow, this format has more information, but not all the confusion of the McRand maps.
I'm a retired forester and a map collection nut, so I'm particular about maps. I have always looked for maps with the old Gousha format and happily Michelin has updated and used it.
For the road: a road atlas
I should not have been surprised, but the scale of these maps does not take you down to street-level navigation of the entire country. Such an atlas would be thicker than several telephone books!
The Michelin Road Atlas is, instead, an atlas for interstate and state highways. It will get you from town to town very easily. What makes it easy? Specifically, the scheme of finding a map number on the inside cover, turning to that page and then on that page finding further numbers for city maps.
Spiral binding and page quality is excellent. I bought one as a gift and one for myself. It was a good purchase and a well-received gift.
Great Atlas
I like the layout. The layout makes the atlas compact enough that you can handle it easily inside of the car (the cover is only 11"x9"). Not having it laid out by state takes a little getting used to. This is a good trade off for having a more manageable size book that is very readable. I absolutely recommend this atlas for anyone trying to use an atlas on the road.
