Product Description

Worldwide terrorism, the escalating conflict in Iraq, and a Democratic sweep of Congress added to the travails of a beleaguered Bush administration and generated a fountain of political commentary in 2006 from editorial cartoonists across the land. This volume, the 35th annual edition in an acclaimed series showcasing the editorial cartoonist's art, examines those issues and dozens of others in the works of more than 160 leading editorial cartoonists in the United States and Canada. Every point of view on the political spectrum is represented in these 425 cartoons--conservative, liberal, and middle of the road, along with various shades in between.

Since 1972, Pelican has presented this diverse compilation of the most outstanding editorial cartoons from publications across the country. Selected for clarity of position as well as for exceptional execution, this collection includes the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning artists, the year's major award-winning cartoons, and the best work from Canadian cartoonists.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School–The Pulitzer Prize and other annual award winners for editorial cartoons open this collection of 425 images. Despite the cover art depicting History reminding us not to repeat the events of September 11, 2001, the cartoons are a visual year in review from 2006 publications. Provocative and challenging, they are laid out in thematic groups and reflect a balance of political views. Topics include presidential politics, elections, global warming, and bird flu. Both national and international issues are covered. A brief context for each theme is presented; however, the editor does not provide analysis or interpretation of individual entries. A list of past award recipients is included. This collection has great potential to enrich government or current-events curricula, but as an annual, it may not be practical for smaller collections.–Meg Canada, Hennepin County Library, MN

Review
"Charles Brooks edits every year a charmer of a volume . . . " -- --Marilis Hornridge, Rockland (ME) Courier-Gazette

About the Author
Charles Brooks is one of the nation's best-known editorial cartoonists. He is a past president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and served for 38 years as editorial cartoonist for the Birmingham News until his retirement at the end of 1985. Since 1973, he has edited the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year series.

Chuck Brooks attended Birmingham Southern College and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied editorial cartooning under two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Vaughn Shoemaker. He served for four years with the combat engineers in World War II; after his discharge, he joined the Birmingham News as an editorial cartoonist in 1948.

His work has earned Mr. Brooks thirteen Freedom Foundation Awards, a national VFW Award, and two Vigilant Patriot Awards. In 1960, he was awarded the National Sigma Delta Chi Award for editorial cartooning. His work forms part of the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Harry S. Truman Library, the Lyndon B. Johnson Library, the Eisenhower Library, the Kennedy Library, the Ronald Reagan Library, the State Historical Society of Missouri, and other archives. His work appears in more than 80 books, including textbooks, yearbooks, and encyclopedias.

Mr. Brooks began the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year series 22 years ago. This is the only annual compilation of editorial cartoons, highlighting the work of artists from across the United States and Canada. Provocative and controversial, Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year was banned from the Moscow Book Fair in 1979. Each volume focuses on all the newsworthy events of the year, as expressed through the pens of the major cartoonists from North America.

Not Sure These Are The Best, But Most Are Good3
I don't know what constitutes the best editorial cartoons of the year and what criteria are used to pick them, but I would have to argue with the editor about some of the choices. While the vast majority were excellent cartoons, and covered the entire range of the 2006 news year, some of the cartoons were far below others in their ability to make one think and laugh (or cry).

Because of the range of the cartoons, the artists and their subjects, there is something here to please everyone and something here to offend just about everyone. That, in and of itself, makes the book a worthwhile read

Editorial Cartoons5
I love editorial cartoons and love Brooks' collection. It is aklways a treat to review the year this way. I could not give his collection a bad rating and admit to being biased in that way.
