Slowpoke America Gone BonkersSlowpoke America Gone Bonkers by Jen Sorensen
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $2.66
Excellent, funny, and highly political. Jen Sorensen rocks!
A Strange DayA Strange Day by Damon Hurd
Buy used from: $0.51
This is so me at about 16. Wonderful slice of life story about two Cure fans meeting by chance.
Common Grounds Volume 1 (1st Printing)Common Grounds Volume 1 (1st Printing) by Troy Hickman
Buy used from: $3.98
Anthology series centered around a chain of coffee/donut shops where super-powered folks congregate. In the tradition of Astro City, but with its own unique voice. Stellar lineup of artists!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 3: Bad BloodBuffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 3: Bad Blood by Andi Watson
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.84
Didn't quite come together, though I love Watson's indie work and Bennett's art. Seems like the middle of a longer overarching story, and may come together better when I get the other parts.
Wonder Woman: Down to EarthWonder Woman: Down to Earth by Greg Rucka
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $5.20
Outstanding! Rucka works wonders with Diana and is telling compelling stories with a bubbling uber-plot. Excellent art, too.
Wonder Woman: Bitter RivalsWonder Woman: Bitter Rivals by Greg Rucka
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $4.99
More Wonderful work from Rucka. Can't believe I have been missing this -- I plan to start picking up this title monthly.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: OzBuffy the Vampire Slayer: Oz by Christopher Golden
Buy used from: $2.68
Answers the musical question "what happened to Oz after he left Sunnydale?" Solids story and art -- one of the better Buffyverse stories not by someone who worked on the show.
Tales of the Slayers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)Tales of the Slayers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) by Joss Whedon
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $5.91
This book makes me smile. All stories by people that worked on the show and a truly amazing line-up of artists. All comics should be this good.
Justice League Adventures: Friends and Foes - Volume 2Justice League Adventures: Friends and Foes - Volume 2 by Various
Buy used from: $1.74
Read to Gabrielle at bedtimes. We both enjoyed them. The lead story is the best of the bunch!
9-11: September 11, 2001 (Stories to Remember, Volume 2)9-11: September 11, 2001 (Stories to Remember, Volume 2) by Neil Gaiman
Buy used from: $1.25
Not sure what made me pull this off the shelf and reread it. I think it was that striking Alex Ross cover. Nevertheless, it remains a stellar, moving anthology.
Superman: The KentsSuperman: The Kents by John Ostrander
Buy used from: $8.50
I had a few issues of this in my collection, but this was my first reading of the whole story. Seamlessly blends history and DC Comics mythology. Gorgeous art from Truman and Mandrake.
Twilight (Star Wars: Ongoing, Volume 4)Twilight (Star Wars: Ongoing, Volume 4) by John Ostrander
Buy used from: $23.25
Ostrander tells a ripping tale with some truly original concepts. Duursema's art is stunning.
Star Wars: DarknessStar Wars: Darkness by John Ostrander
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $3.38
Another tale featuring charcters from the previous book. Another ripping tale from Ostrander and Duursema's art is even better in this one!
40 oz. Collection40 oz. Collection by Jim Mahfood
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.99
All Jim Mahfood's 40 oz. mini-comics. Mahfood's usual great stuff with Zombie Kid, Grrl Scouts, Smoke Dog, Rocket Boy, and best of all, an adaptation of They Might Be Giants' "She's An Angel."
Bizarro WorldBizarro World by Various
Buy used from: $8.99
I will not review this in Bizarro speak. A fun collection of off-kilter superhero strips from alternative comics and other media voices.
The Chronicles of Conan, Vol. 1: Tower of the Elephant and Other StoriesThe Chronicles of Conan, Vol. 1: Tower of the Elephant and Other Stories by Roy Thomas
Buy new: $11.96 / Used from: $2.84
Finally filling in one of the few holes in my comics education with Thomas and Windsor-Smith's fantastic, classic Conan stories. Great stuff!
Hopeless Savages Volume 1 DigestHopeless Savages Volume 1 Digest by Jen Van Meter
Buy used from: $2.27
I bought this in single issues when it originally came out, but recently got a great deal on the trade for quick rereading. I adore these characters and stories!
Jingle Belle Volume 3: Dash Away All (v. 3)Jingle Belle Volume 3: Dash Away All (v. 3) by Paul Dini
Buy used from: $1.58
I think ithis is one of the best Jingle Belle tales, though I was a little disappointed with the sketchiness of the art. Best scene is Jing delivering gifts to other Oni characters. Fun!
Courtney Crumrin, Vol. 1: Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things (Courtney Crumrin (Graphic Novels))Courtney Crumrin, Vol. 1: Courtney Crumrin & The Night Things (Courtney Crumrin (Graphic Novels)) by Ted Naifeh
Buy new: $9.56 / Used from: $2.78
Another I bought in singles that I picked up the trade for quick rereading. I love Courtney!
Hellboy: Right Hand of DoomHellboy: Right Hand of Doom by Mike Mignola
Buy new: $13.46 / Used from: $3.90
I think this is my favorite of the Hellboy books I've read. I think he works best in short stories and I like the scope of the collection.
The Zero GameThe Zero Game by Brad Meltzer
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
After getting to know Meltzer from comics, I picked up this novel and it's one heck of a thriller. Political intrigue and white-knuckled action. Could make a great flick.
Shutterbug Follies: Graphic Novel (Doubleday Graphic Novels)Shutterbug Follies: Graphic Novel (Doubleday Graphic Novels) by Jason Little
Buy new: $21.33 / Used from: $0.30
Read this at the library while my daughter was using the educational software. What a great book! An involving, thrilling mystery with gorgeous art!
EscalatorEscalator by Brandon Graham
Buy new: $11.65 / Used from: $6.50
I was unfamiliar with Graham's work before reading this. but I like his stories and love his artistic sensibility -- kind of a midpoint between Mahfood and Amanda Conner. Nice!
The SecretThe Secret by Eva Hoffman
Buy new: $19.00 / Used from: $2.03
The titular secret won't be hard to figure out for anyone who's read a little science fiction, but it's an absorbing charcter study anyway, as Hoffman digs into the mind and soul of a s-f archetype.
