![]() | Film and Comic Books
Buy new: $25.00 / Used from: $14.35 I co-edited this book, but wrote only the introduction. There are some really wonderful essays in this book on the various issues involved in the adaption of comics into film.

![]() | Comic Books as History: The Narrative Art of Jack Jackson, Art Spiegelman, and Harvey Pekar (Studies in Popular Culture) by Joseph Witek
Buy new: $22.50 / Used from: $14.96 Rusty Witek was the first of a younger (well probably not so young anymore) set of academics to publish a rigorous work on comics. This book deserved attention and I reviewed it in American Quarterly. I wish I had said more about its strengths. Witek takes comic books seriously and builds an argument that flows from the comic books rather than seeing them simply reflecting society.

![]() | The Early Comic Strip: Narrative Strips and Picture Stories in the European Broadsheet from c.1450 to 1825 (History of the Comic Strip, Volume 1) by David Kunzle
Buy used from: $194.00 Kunzle gives us a way to read comics in their social context. His account of the development of the form, mixing of images and texts, is or should be the basis of any serious study of comics. Be sure to get Vol 2 as well which is not listed here.
![]() | Arguing Comics: Literary Masters on a Popular Medium (Studies in Popular Culture)
Buy new: $15.95 / Used from: $10.98 I had read all of the pieces in this book and have many of them in my files, but I still wanted a copy because bringing them together in a single volume is a great idea.
![]() | Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book by Gerard Jones
Buy new: $8.67 / Used from: $1.53 This book has been endorsed by the grandees of the comics world so hardly needs my recommendation, but I enjoyed it. I wish he had cited his sources a little more, but better than Coulton Waugh by a long shot.
![]() | The Comics: An Illustrated History Of Comic Strip Art by Jerry Robinson
I read this a long time ago but I think it contained many correctives to oft told legends.
![]() | The Art of the Funnies: An Aesthetic History (Studies in Popular Culture) by Robert C. Harvey
Buy new: $30.00 / Used from: $2.06 I like this book because it has an argument. See my review on the book's page.
![]() | The Art of the Comic Book: An Aesthetic History (Studies in Popular Culture) by Robert C. Harvey
Buy new: $21.69 / Used from: $9.00 He makes an argument about aesthetics rather than just saying X is a great artist.

![]() | Comics & Ideology (Popular Culture and Everyday Life, Vol. 2)
Buy new: $31.95 / Used from: $30.00 Yes I am one of the co-editors but this book is well worth a look for the many essays in addition to my own on "Nostalgia, Myth, and Ideology: Visions of Superman at the End of the 'American Century'.
![]() | Beyond the Lines: Pictorial Reporting, Everyday Life, and the Crisis of Gilded Age America by Joshua Brown

Buy used from: $1.03 Another oldie that is worth a look.
![]() | The Comics (Studies in Popular Culture Series) by Coulton Waugh
Buy new: $25.00 / Used from: $8.69 This work trades in gossip and too oft told tales about the origins of comic strips. He gets it wrong about as often as he gets it right. But still worth a look.
![]() | Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America by Bradford W. Wright
Buy new: $15.64 / Used from: $9.66 Lots of people love this book but as I say in my review I wish he had shown us how comic books influenced the nation rather than just how they reflected it in a fun house mirror.
![]() | Bad Language, Naked Ladies, and Other Threats to the Nation: A Political History of Comic Books in Mexico by Anne Rubenstein
Buy new: $18.66 / Used from: $10.77 This book comes heavily blurbed and much recommended above. But why? Basically Rubenstein has covered all the bases both giving a brief overview Mexican comics and also showing how they were part of an ongoing debate about the nature of Mexican society and culture.
![]() | America's Great Comic-Strip Artists: From the Yellow Kid to Peanuts by Richard Marschall
Buy used from: $0.94 Marschall has a passion for comic art and although sometimes I wish he was a little more nuanced in his statements about the greatness of artists, for instance I disagree with him about Dirks, but still think Dirks was important in the development of comics. The book remains worth having.
