I co-edited this book, but wrote only the introduction. There are some really wonderful essays in this book on the various issues involved in the adaption of comics into film.

Rusty Witek was the first of a younger (well probably not so young anymore) set of academics to publish a rigorous work on comics. This book deserved attention and I reviewed it in American Quarterly. I wish I had said more about its strengths. Witek takes comic books seriously and builds an argument that flows from the comic books rather than seeing them simply reflecting society.

I had read all of the pieces in this book and have many of them in my files, but I still wanted a copy because bringing them together in a single volume is a great idea.

I read this a long time ago but I think it contained many correctives to oft told legends.

He makes an argument about aesthetics rather than just saying X is a great artist.

Of the big coffee table type books on comics this volume and its companion volume are the best.

Yes I am one of the co-editors but this book is well worth a look for the many essays in addition to my own on "Nostalgia, Myth, and Ideology: Visions of Superman at the End of the 'American Century'.”

This work trades in gossip and too oft told tales about the origins of comic strips. He gets it wrong about as often as he gets it right. But still worth a look.

This book comes heavily blurbed and much recommended above. But why? Basically Rubenstein has covered all the bases both giving a brief overview Mexican comics and also showing how they were part of an ongoing debate about the nature of Mexican society and culture.

Good clear outline of the background and implementation of the code.

What I like most about this book is what it shows us about the fans of Milestone comics.

I keep dipping into this book for useful concepts on how to think about comic book superheroes.
