Great for a beginner as well as seasoned UN vet.
I was impressed by the sheer amount of information in this book---and by how easy it was to understand. The author adeptly explains the functioning of the United Nations as well as the UN in an historical context. The writing is clear and enjoyable to read, and the diagrams and photos add an all-important visual aid. This book would be great as a text for a class or even just a stellar pleasure reading book for those interested in international relations.
Clear and comprehensive
This book is great: a lucid and entertaining account of the United Nations. It's impressive that Fasulo is able to explain the functionings of such a large (and some would argue convoluted) organization with such clarity. The text is spry, and it's clear that the author has had a lot of experience as an independent chronicler of the organization. The text covers the history of the United Nations as well as recent and relevant topics such as climate change and the election of Barack Obama. The numerous candid accounts from diplomats, observers, supporters, and critics alike make you really feel like you are an "insider." A very fresh and smart book.
Review by MA IR graduate
This is a satisfactory introduction to the United Nations. I would have liked to see more about the history of the UN and the corner stones of the foreign pollicy at least of the P5 to explain why they vote how they vote. Speaking of which; there is only few information on the decision-making process and what majorities are needed and when resolutions are binding etc. More politics and less of what eerybody can find for free on Wikipedia would have been better.
Overall, three stars for a satisfactory intro to the UN.
