The Rise of Cobra is not your grandfather's G.I. Joe. It's more like C.G.I. Joe with explosive special-effects action sequences that provide the film with a surplus of "Boom Boom Pow" (to quote the Black Eyed Peas song that drives the end credits). This blast from the summer past is very much like the metal-munching nano-mite missiles a (literally) mad Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt cashing in some of his indie cred) and McCullen, a Scottish weapons dealer (Christopher Eccleston), threaten to unleash upon the world. It never stops. Ever. The original G.I. Joe action figure was an all-American hero. These Joes are--all together now--"the best of the best," an elite multi-national squad. Two soldiers, Duke (a buff Channing Tatum), an "on the ground, in the fight" kind of guy, and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans), his wisecracking best friend, are rescued by the Joes after they are ambushed while transporting the missiles. These are no ordinary Joes. Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) is a silent ninja, Stella (Rachel Nichols) a bodacious brainiac, Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) the imposing weapons specialist, and Breaker (Said Taghamaoui) the techie. They are led by gruff Gen. Hawk (Dennis Quaid), who barks out lines like, "When all else fails, we don't," with polish. Duke and Ripcord are recruited to join the classified unit after Duke discovers that Ana (Sienna Miller), his former fiancée, is in cahoots with McCullen and now sports the sinister moniker the Baroness, not to mention killer cleavage-enhancing latex outfits. This being the first in a budding franchise, there is much backstory to cover. Flashbacks date back to 1641! But the order of the day is underground military command centers, underwater evil lairs, gleaming high-tech weaponry, breakneck chases, and cool gadgets, such as a speed-accelerating hydraulic suit. It's enough to make you want to dust off your original Hasbro action figures or, the studio no doubt hopes, buy the new ones. --Donald Liebenson

Great movie for kids and family!
This movie is really great. We bought it for our sons after trying to watch the horrible transformers 2 movie (never again). Unlike that movie, this is a fairly wholesome movie, there is some killing and a few cuss words, but all in all it just action packed fun. It kept my sons attention and explained some things about Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes (like why he never talks & how they are related). If your looking for a father-son movie that has a lot of action yet is wholesome, this is it..... I can't believe the ratings on this are not better.
Many Differences From Comic and 80s Cartoon
This was a great action movie, but if you are familiar with the comic series and/or the 80s cartoon, you will be disappointed with the differences. I realize that it's hard to turn an ongoing series into one movie plot, or to make a cartoon look good in live-action, but they should have realized that most of the people who choose to watch this movie are already fans of G.I. Joe (and they will notice every little detail).
First of all, G.I. Joe wasn't part of NATO or the UN - they are "real American heroes" because G.I. Joe is suppose to be an American orginization. I guess they were trying to be politically correct. I did get a kick out of Brendan Frasier as Sgt. Stone, but kind of silly. Scarlett is suppose to be Snake Eyes woman, not Ripcord - give me a break...and they portrayed the Baroness as Duke's ex-fiance *rolls eyes* I was really disappointed with Cobra Commander - he looked and sounded more like Destro than the actual Destro character (Christopher Eccleston wasn't convincing). The worst part was casting Arnold Vosloo (from The Mummy) as Zartan - they pretty much ruined that character...and those just are few of the problems with the movie discrepancies.
I did like the scenes with Stormshadow and Snake Eyes, and even the flashbacks weren't too bad (although Stormshadow didn't kill their master). Their fight scenes were some of the best action sequences. In general, lots of explosions, fancy high-tech weapons, etc, as G.I. Joe fights to stop the forces of COBRA from using nano-technology to wreak havoc...lots of flashbacks for several of the characters. As I said, a great action movie, but a not-so-great crossover from the comic and cartoon.
P.S. The CGI polar bear made me laugh - it's as if Dennis Quaid can't be in a movie with live animals (re: CGI wolves in The Day After Tomorrow.
Good Movie
When I saw the movie in theaters I really enjoyed it and automatically knew that I wanted the DVD. But once I got the DVD it kinda sucked watching it because I already knew what the big surprise in the movie was, so the DVD has only been watched once. Other than that I'm happy to have added it to my collection of movies.
