![]() | Improvise.: Scene from the Inside Out by Mick Napier
Buy new: $12.80 / Used from: $9.80 An improviser for whom I have a great deal of respect once told me that this was the only book you'll ever need for improv. She was right. It explains it in a coherent, entertaining way and convinces you that you or anyone could do it. What is needed to improvise? What works best or worst? It may not be the only book you want to read, but it explains the basics and is the only one you'll NEED.

![]() | Process: An Improviser's Journey by Mary Scruggs
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $16.13 Gellman is a master, and this is the next best thing to taking one of his workshops. It is a narrative, following the story of some of his students as they discover their own shortcomings as any student would. Most books do not have this multitude of perspectives, and I find this a great book for that purpose alone. It's also another very entertaining read.

![]() | Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre by Keith Johnstone
Buy new: $20.84 / Used from: $12.16 Still need more? Then read this. It gets elemental in its explanation of the basics, devoting a large amount of its pages to the idea of status. It will change the way you look at scenes and at life, and introduces some very intriguing and useful ideas. The last part of the book is about mask work, and it's one of the most interesting things I've ever read, but only tangentially applies to improv.

![]() | Truth in Comedy: The Manual of Improvisation by Charna Halpern
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $5.66 By now, you should know better than to read this. It explains the basics in a concise manner, true, but risks claiming to be a guidebook. It tells about the Harold form, but builds said form up to be more than might be safe. Not that you shouldn't look at it as lofty art if you want, but try it yourself first. And Napier deconstructs the rules better than Halpern plainly lays them on the table.

![]() | Art by Committee: A Guide to Advanced Improvisation by Charna Halpern
Buy new: $15.61 / Used from: $15.15 No, I have not read this. But here's why I think it would be valuable: it comes with a dvd of some great improv teams, which, unless you're a student or performer in Chicago or another improv-laden city, you won't get the chance to see. And, second to performing it or taking a workshop, seeing it in action is the most valuable thing you can do.

![]() | The Second City Almanac of Improvisation by Anne Libera
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $19.56 Another I haven't read, but I'm told that it's basically an amalgam of different improvisers sharing what they think the most important things to know about improv are. Sound like something you want? Still need something else to read? Okay, why not.
