True Stories from a Wasteland called Earth: Strange New Fiction & Bizarre TalesTrue Stories from a Wasteland called Earth: Strange New Fiction & Bizarre Tales by Aaron Carnes
Buy new: $12.99
This first entry is my own book. I'm technically someone that I know, though it's debatable whether or not we are friends.
The Best of The Harveyville Fun Times! The Best of The Harveyville Fun Times! by Mark Arnold
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $16.99
Mark wrote this book over the course of 17+ years. I first got to know him when he helped me film a short film. His big shining moment was playing the dirty homeless man sprawled out at the park. The main character tripped over him and rolled down the hill.
SkafunkrastapunkSkafunkrastapunk by Skankin' Pickle
Buy used from: $2.00
I saw Skankin Pickle first play many years ago while they were still pushing this album. I was instantly obsessed and wrote them a long fan letter, some 4-5 pages of handwritten hysteria. They wrote back saying, "Aaron thank you for your letter...here is an orange peel for you!" I continued to write them long letters and Mike started calling me get me stop writing letters.
Sing Along With Skankin' PickleSing Along With Skankin' Pickle by Skankin' Pickle
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $1.85
Mike lent me a copy of the rough studio mix of this album. My personal favorite song didn't make the final cut. "So far away" which the bass player sang. When my band opened up for them, we did an homage to this lost classic, asking his wife to go-go dance on stage while we performed. When we finished, he came up on stage and dumped a pitcher of ice cold water over my head. Friends 4 ever
Sweet Meats & Eye BallsSweet Meats & Eye Balls by Dan Potthast
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $3.15
Dan is the lead singer for MU300. I made a video for the song "They're talkin." The premise being that people are out there, listening to other people on their 'tin can on a string' telephones. Chaos ensues. I've done a few video projects with Dan. I feel like my relationship with him is to device physical and/or humiliating tasks for him to perform, him gleefully agreeing, and me filming them.
Arriving AliveArriving Alive by Desa
Buy used from: $4.78
Desa's guitarist, Adam Davis is both an old friend and a freak. We used to be in a band together. He was known as the guy that wore a prison jump suit and gas mask. Mid-way through the show, he'd strip down to his underwear and do the 'Russian Rap.' This was the peak of live music. Everything has been downhill since.
The Bald Witch Project [VHS]The Bald Witch Project [VHS]

I've hung out with director Shawn Flanagan on a couple of occasions. When he told me why he made movies, he said, "I got bitten by the bug." I feel the same way about writing books. I imagine the bug to be some hideous disease infested parasite.
Crab RangoonCrab Rangoon by Mu330
Buy used from: $4.99
Everything changed for MU330 when Gerry Strongquist joined the band. Maybe they wouldn't become more famous or sell more records, but they would have more fun. Whenever I see Gerry, I go where he goes and do what he does. I'd advice you to do the same.
The Old StuffThe Old Stuff by My Former Self
Buy new: $9.49
Two other guys and I made a video for this band as a college project (I'll be careful, you'll be dead.) We had them scarf down burritos, jump on the trampoline with stuffed animals, ride their scooters through High School...you know to get the sweet shots. In the video, the band played the bad guys, bullying the nerd. The nerd then got revenge by kissing the ladies. The band loved it.
Green AlbumGreen Album by Skankin' Pickle
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $2.43
I think this was Skankin Pickle's best album, even though they didn't write most of the songs. I toured with them as roadie when they put this out. I tried to become best friends with their bass player, Jay. It went well at first, till I took some of his potato at Arby's and he declared our best friendship over. Then he quit the band and started his own group with only robots.
Unsigned HypeUnsigned Hype by Counter Productive

I'm not technically friends with this group, but I do work with their DJ. So as far as I'm concerned, that counts. Another notch on the bed post for me! Score for Carnes! Hell Yeah!

I went to San Jose State to study film & TV. (if I haven't already stated) One of my teachers made this film. I thought she was a really good insightful teacher, and was surprised when I actually saw the movie. Oh well, it's not like any of my movies were good.
For the Love of MusicFor the Love of Music by Mike Park
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.43
I rented a room at Mike's house for a short while. We'd have interesting house guests. Like The Japanese ska band, or the roadie with two weeks between gigs. The downside was that Mike would barge into my room after I went to bed, turn on my lights, put my novelty Disney skull head in my bed and say, "What about the monster?" then close the door and leave.
Survivor All-Stars - The Complete SeasonSurvivor All-Stars - The Complete Season
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $14.96
So, I'm grasping at straws here...I know that. I am referring to Lex (who was on season 3 as well.) But let me say that I have eaten enchiladas at his house with him and his family before. So I say that seals the deal. Put him on the list.
Pop Rock SoulPop Rock Soul by Lon Lopez
Buy used from: $2.04
Before "The Booty Call," Lon Lopez was most known for his band Statueman. Their biggest hit single was a cover of the Sesame Street alphabet song. It got the crowd moshing. It really brought out the violence in humanity. Lon & I used to high tale it over to Taco Bravo after shows and order up some Boneyards. There's nothing better than bad Mexican food at 2:30am.
You Were on My Mind/Make Someone HappyYou Were on My Mind/Make Someone Happy by We Five
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.06
The bass player (I think it was the bass player...) from this band used to come into 7-11 when I worked there. He was a born again Christian now, and was working on a book about the years he spent being homeless. He went off the grid on purpose so he could better learn about these people. He saw me reading David Sedaris and pegged me as a reader, giving me the first few chapters to read.
Musical MonkeyMusical Monkey by Guttermouth
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.37
Kevin Dill roadied for this band for a number of years. He is listed as "producer" & "Mixing" on this record. Likely meaning he compiled the weirded, most warped video clips for the band while they were trying to record. If you've ever met Kevin you know that he is both the nicest guy you ever met & the meanest bully. He's a big nerd, yet somehow the coolest guy in the world.
Greetings From Lake WuGreetings From Lake Wu by Jay Lake
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $3.91
my friend, Chris Garcia wrote the introduction to this book. Chris is most famous for his zine, Drink Tank. There are no Drink Tank compilations on Amazon, yet. So you should google it read it on-line if you care to learn more. I tried to write an article for Chris once, and all i could come up with was a two page angry rant about how pop-culture deficient I am and that I hate the world.
Misfits of Ska, Vol. 2Misfits of Ska, Vol. 2 by Various Artists
Buy used from: $0.62
Ok... embarrassing, but here I go. My old ska band had a track on this compilation. In fact, it was one of the few songs I sang. I'm not sure I want to give you anymore information than that. Oh what the heck! The band was "Flat Planet." The song "Mr. Goodbuddy." It's all about lifting weights and pounding on nerds!
Bay Area SkaBay Area Ska by Various Artists
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $0.98
This was the other release my old ska band was on. (not gonna mention the name again. If you want to find out then go to the previous entry.) This CD, there were fewer bands. Therefore each band got several songs. And you'll even get to hear the song I wrote about Joey Lawrence.

Dane Andrew had a small uncredited part in this TV movie. I know Dane through Mark Arnold. (2nd entry) Dan is most famous for having the ugliest dog in the world. He's even been on The View to show off his pooch!

The mysterious AJ Junker appeared briefly in a scene in the bonus footage to this DVD. In the shot, Borat, played by Sacha Baron Cohen, enters the San Francisco theater. He pivots towards the audience, grabs AJ (the short bearded freak) and kisses him on the lips. Applause fills the stadium. A photo of this kiss nearly made AJ famous for several months, as it appeared on the home page of myspace.
Cut to the ChaseCut to the Chase by Diamond Lane
Buy new: $18.99
I recorded a live concert video for these guys. They are like every 80's hair metal band reincarnate, in their early 20's and totally without irony. When I gave them the finished DVD, they were playing the Guitar Hero video game. (Yet again with no irony) The whole time they played, they never once offered me the fake guitar. Back and forth each of them played several times. I left crying.
Lost - The Complete First SeasonLost - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $19.95
I interned on a independent movie called, "Drifting Elegant." Since one of my duties was to cart actors around, I consider them all close personal friends. (Even though they've stopped answering my calls.) First up from Drifting Elegant is actor Donnie Kershawarz. He was in an episode of Lost. One of the Sayid flashbacks.
Six Feet Under - The Complete Third SeasonSix Feet Under - The Complete Third Season
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $5.99
Next up from Drifting Elegant: Josh Stamberg. He played probably my favorite bit character to ever graze the set of six feet under...Sarge. A cool as school bad boy mofo who has a three-way with David & Keith. After their done, he throws on his shades, sticks out his fingers in a peace sign, says, "Check you later, dudes." (paraphrased)

The fourth and final main actor on the set of Drifting Elegant: Coby Bell. Him and I rarely spoke. But we had this weird thing where we both coincidentally went to the bathroom at the same time. Several times this happened, to where it became an inside joke between us. But otherwise it was dead silence.

I used to be roommates with their old keyboard player, Peter "The Cow-man" Cowan. Peter and I used to geek out and listen to each other's vinyl collections in the living room. Maybe have a beer. Discuss issues of the day...

Gilbert (or Aaron?) played Reno in this movie. He also starred in a short film I made for college. In my film, he played a guy whose wife finds a bloody jacket in the closet. He gets suspicious, convinces her that it's nothing, has a big relationshipy fight, then she submits. He steps outside to throw it away. Only, when he's gone, she calls the police. Powerful stuff.
I Hate You, F--k You, Shut Up!I Hate You, F--k You, Shut Up! by Captured! By Robots
Buy used from: $6.74
I first met Jay-bot when he was fully human and playing bass for Skankin' Pickle. Eventually, he quit and built his own band. Something went horribly wrong and the robots that were to be his musical slaves, enslaved him. Forcing him to be in their all robot band. If you ever go to their shows, it's tragic. Entertaining, but really sad.
Mashin Potatoes: Tribute to DevoMashin Potatoes: Tribute to Devo by Various Artists

Middagh Goodwin put this compilation out. I toured with him. We were both lowly roadies on the Skankin Pickle tour. By the way, I signed two autographs on that tour while putting the drums away. People, I guess, mistook me for the drummer. Sweet! Middagh, if you haven't been watching the news, has been running for president. I don't think he won.

My friend Shannon's father is the world famous actor Kurtwood Smith. Here he plays the main bad guy. His most famous role is "Red," the father on that 70's show. I've never met Kurtwood, but Shannon & I used to play together in the garage punk band, "The Sudsmen!" The drunkest band in the west coast. Our big gimmick was that we wore empty beercases over our heads. People loved it.

I used to know Danielle Steel's son, Nick some years ago before he died. Never met Danielle, but I drove past her house once. Very big. It looked like a national monument of sorts.

Nick, Danielle Steel's son fronted this band. (who I knew) My friend Mike released it. Later after this album my friends Adam & Seth would join this band. This hella belongs on the list. I should bump it up to the number six position! What do you at home think?
Tantra MonstersTantra Monsters by Tantra Monsters

Their trombonist, Shigue and I used to write letters back and forth to each other...though I only met him once. He used to play shows naked except for an ice cube covering his manwich. Back in the early nineties he had a short lived sitcom, "Fun with Shigue." Very strange.

I don't know Greg Camp, but I have met him once. In fact I interviewed him. (not to mention that he's San Jose. I'm San Jose. Think about it!) He's a nice guy. He used to hang out at the Cactus Club, which is an old defunct San Jose dive club. The Cactus was the first "club" I ever hung out myself. Another slam dunk.

This entry is metaphorical. I don't know apple computers or anything like that. What I'm trying to express to you is that I've made friends with technology. That I think computers are a good thing. I believe in man's progress and science. It's been a rocky road, technology and I. But in the end, we're thick as thieves and I'm an advocate.
