Customer Reviews
Very Interesting.
Having reviewed other publications dealing with ranch house design or modernism in general, I was quite interested in the concept of this magazine.
As much as I personally admire modernism in the more extreme end, it hasn't seemed very pragmatic for day to day living. My fondness for ranch houses seems to speak to both issues.
With this publication, there is an explicit direction to consider for "livable modernism." One of the articles was entitled that, as well.
Recalling that modernism is grounded in the '30s, our Depression, helps to explain why generalized expressions took until the '50s and '60s. But by then, we had TV to help mess over the concept and give us some pretty gross decorating ideas.
The ubiquitous Tiki bar motif in post-war ranch family rooms wasn't premeditated taste.
This magazine seems to take a look at livable modernism from a historical perspective, but then to project it into a contemporary context.
After all, I believe the masters of modernism referred to houses as "engines for living." Sometimes ya' need to overhaul but NOT abandon the concept.
Poor photography
I was surprised about the poor photography in the inside pages. It doesn't invite to read them at all. Moreover, the ads are just awful. You can find some interesting articles though if you don't mind the aesthetic part of reading.
