Best All Around New York Map Out There!5
I bought this map for some friends that were coming into town and then bought an extra one for myself. This really is the best all around Manhattan map I've been able to find, and believe me there are a lot of them. The size is smaller than most laminated maps, so you can fit it into your pocket, but not so small that it leaves out important details. It also folds out to a nice size that isn't awkward or noticeable on the street. The information is thorough and concise, including a subway map (with tips on navigating the system), bus map, listing of museums and post offices, and handy phone numbers for car services and the like. It's laid out so a tourist could make sense of it right away, but includes useful details (like post office listings) that an area resident like myself needs. I keep this thing in my backpack at all times now. Oh yeah, and the best part is, it's way cheaper than all the other maps, which usually start at $5.95 and go up from there. I don't want to spend more than five bucks on a friggin' map!

BEST NYC MAP - not just for tourists5
JULY 2004
I'm planning on visiting & moving to NYC. I went to several bookstores and looked at over 20 maps, and this is THE MOST USEFUL (and the least expensive). It is pocketsized, folds easily, fonts & graphics are easy to read, and has all the major stuff listed right on the main map (e.g. streets & 1way direction for drivers, train lines & stops, bus routes, famous tourist/historical sites, schools, hospitals, parks, etc). My husband and I visited NYC several times and used it constantly... If you are only going to Manhattan, you probably won't need any other map. Best of all, it's only $4....

MORE DETAILS:
The map is LAMINATED, so it is fairly heavy duty (water resistant, won't rip easily).
I especially like how everything is on ONE PAGE instead of having to flip through a 20 page booklet (other maps tend to cut up the city into chunks or list only one category of info on each page. This map puts it all one one page so that you can see where the nearest subway station is in relation to the street or site you want to go to.) The text/font is also surprisingly easy too read (doesn't look too microscopic or messy). Another nice thing is that since it is an accordion fold, if you're trying to figure out where to go next, you can discretely look at the section of map you want, instead doing what some tourists do (I've seen people stand in the middle of streets or subway staring at a big 5ft by 5ft tourist map...making it so obvious that they're lost).

OCTOBER 2006 UPDATE
This map is great. I'm still using the one I bought over 2 years ago, and it hasn't fallen apart even though I use it almost every day.
Now that I've lived in NYC for a while, I still think this is the best and only map needed to get around the city. Amazon's site doesn't tell you this, but they are shipping the most current edition (e.g. no more #9 train line). I know this because I have bought several dozen over the past few years to give to my friends visiting from out of town and also my NYC friends think it's a great map and want one for themselves.

2009 UPDATE:
I still live in NYC...5 years now. I'm still using it and getting it for my visiting friends or as welcome gift for newcomers. I forgot to mention before, this is one of the very few maps that also includes UPPER MANHATTAN (Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood, etc), while most other NYC maps only show what's south of 100th Street.

Absolutely the best map....5
...of Manhattan that I've seen or used. I've given away multiple copies to visitng friends, and it's the sort of map I like to always keep in my bookbag. Having lived in NYC three years and visited on many occasions before that, I appreciate the following things about the map:

1. It shows both streets and subways to scale. Usually one has to choose either huge street maps or abstract, not-to-scale subway maps. This map simply and cleanly locates the subway lines and stations exactly where they are on the street.

2. It has a slim profile and durable lamination. Nothing fancy, it just unfolds accordion-style. Even a tourist can discreetly check his location without attracting undue attention.

3. The entire island of Manhattan is illustrated in one piece, not like those tourist maps that suggest that anything north of Central Park is No Man's Land. People living in Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood will appreciate not having to turn the map over to view their neighborhoods.

4. It's cheap. No reason to spend a lot of money when an excellent product costs $5.

5. Easy to read and easy to use.

That being said, although this map would help a person drive in Manhattan, it's not really designed to be used while driving. (After all, it's for New Yorkers.) It has a full five-borough subway map on the back which is helpful for those times one must leave Manhattan, but it doesn't include much detail of the outer boroughs so as not to encourage us to linger.

You won't be disappointed with this product.
