![]() | Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.90 This is one I keep coming back to when I want to get the party started. The interaction between Junior Wells on harmonica/vocals and Buddy Guy on guitar is unforgettable. Good makin' love music (like a lot of what's on this list).

![]() | Etta James Rocks the House by Etta James
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.15 So many great Etta James recordings, but this is the one that, to me, really captures her spirit.
![]() | West Side Soul by Magic Sam
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.39 Another one I like to put on while in partying mode. A great but somewhat obscure blues singer who tragically died of a heart attack at 32.
![]() | Hound Dog: The Peacock Recordings by Big Mama Thornton
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.98 "Hound Dog" is one here, but not "Ball 'n' Chain". But there's a ton of other gems here from when this large woman was at the top of her game.
![]() | Bonnie Raitt by Bonnie Raitt
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.00 Out of all the Bonnie Raitt albums I've heard, this first recording is the one I keep coming back to. The songs are great and memorable, and her voice is as full of passion as any singer I can think of.
![]() | First Recordings by R.L. Burnside
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.00 Dark, intense, trance-inducing blues.
![]() | Howlin' Wolf: His Best (Chess 50th Anniversary Collection) by Howlin' Wolf
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $7.99 The singer that first got me into the blues. I drank a lot of beer listening to this in college.
![]() | Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.50 It took me a while to accept Stevie Ray Vaughan as a truly great musician, but listening to this incredible debut album I really can't imagine why. While not especially original as a guitar player, his solos just sound so nice I can't help but love it.
![]() | You Better Run: The Essential Junior Kimbrough by Junior Kimbrough
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $10.43 Defines, in my mind, the Fat Possum sound. Minimalist in the best sense of the word.
![]() | At Newport by Muddy Waters
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.45 As I understand it, perhaps the most famous blues set ever. Of course there's many other great Muddy Waters recordings, but I believe this is a good place to start.
![]() | King of the Delta Blues Singers by Robert Johnson
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.79 I'm sad for people who don't know this music. If you're at all interested in this kind of music, just make sure this is in your collection.
![]() | Dark Was the Night by Blind Willie Johnson
Buy used from: $2.98 Avant-garde gospel blues recorded in the late 1920s. I can't think of any superlative that begins to do this justice.
![]() | The Progressive Blues Experiment by Johnny Winter

![]() | His Best :(Little Walter)The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection by Little Walter

![]() | Hard Time Killing Floor Blues by Skip James
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $28.65 The best recording after being rediscovered in the 60s (after 30 years of not recording). While some people are going to definitely prefer the original 1931 recordings, which are of course great, this is what I keep listening to. He sounds just as intense, in my opinion, and the sound quality if vastly superior.
![]() | The Blues Is Now by Jimmy Witherspoon
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.79 I've returned many times to this great singer's collaboration with jazz organist Brother Jack McDuff.
![]() | Down and Out Blues by Sonny Boy Williamson II
Buy used from: $10.99 Kind of confusing how there are two Sonny Boy Williamsons in blues. This is a great place to start, I believe, with the later Sonny Boy Williamson.
![]() | Avalon Blues : Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings by Mississippi John Hurt
Buy used from: $1.59 Like Skip James, he was rediscovered in the 60s after not recording (and hardly playing) for 30+ years. I love it all. Here are the original sessions, but the 60s recordings made when he was in his 70s are also definitely worth hearing. Feel good blues in the best way.
![]() | Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: J.B. Lenoir by J.B. Lenoir
Buy used from: $3.97 A great but obscure 60s blues singer who was featured in Martin Scorsese produced series (in the episode directed by Wim Wenders). Touches on politics in a way few blues singers do.
![]() | Leadbelly by Leadbelly
Buy used from: $0.98 Good (and cheap) place to start with this intense and influential blues/folk singer. Played with Woody Guthrie, covered by Kurt Cobain.

![]() | Electric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

![]() | Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.82 No one else who I've heard played this kind of San Francisco psychedelic blues as good as Big Brother. Janis Joplin at her creative peak.
![]() | Fresh Cream by Cream
Buy new: $7.97 / Used from: $3.33 Maybe more rock than strictly blues, but Clapton just has to make an appearance on this list, and I just love this album (and so many other albums Clapton touches).
![]() | Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton by John Mayall & the Blues Breakers

![]() | Heroes of the Blues: The Very Best of Fred McDowell by Mississippi Fred McDowell
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.94 This compilation is from my experience a great place to start with this raw and essential blues singer.
![]() | Nina Simone Sings the Blues by Nina Simone
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $5.25 While not usually classified as a blues singer, like Billie Holiday the quality of her voice is typically more blues than jazz.
![]() | Founder of the Delta Blues by Charlie Patton
Buy used from: $13.98 One of the best compilations form of the earliest and most harrowing blues singers. Some musicians have a style that can never be copied.
![]() | The Complete Aladdin Recordings by Lightnin' Hopkins
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.95 He played the blues. He drank whiskey. This double disc collection of his seminal works is worth 10 times this budget price.
![]() | The Complete Bukka White by Bukka White
Buy used from: $14.91 Stark early blues that doesn't sound like anything else. As otherworldly (and unique) as Charlie Patton or Skip James.
![]() | The Very Best of John Lee Hooker by John Lee Hooker
Buy used from: $2.67 I don't know a better John Lee Hooker collection (though of course that doesn't mean there's not a better place to start with this heavily recorded blues singer). Every song is a classic that sticks with you.
![]() | Shake Your Moneymaker: The Best of the Fire Sessions by Elmore James
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.74 A good place to start with Elmore James, who was as great as Muddy Waters but who didn't quite live long enough to enjoy the blues revival of the 60s.
![]() | Deep Blues by Original Soundtrack
Buy used from: $7.99 I love this collection of music from this great movie. Really got me into the whole Fat Possum sound.
