Executive Thinking: The Dream, the Vision, the Mission AchievedExecutive Thinking: The Dream, the Vision, the Mission Achieved by Leslie L. Kossoff
Buy new: $19.67 / Used from: $6.72
I have had the great good fortune in my over twenty years working with executives of having worked with some of the best minds in the world. This book is the codification of what they taught me - from their dreams of what their organizations can be to the obstacles that they confront every day and how they both address and transcend them.
Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don'tGood to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't by Jim Collins
Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $4.85
This book has taken a lot of unfair hits since it was first published - particularly recently. It's a great read because what you're looking for is the developmental executive thinking-to-action process that Collins describes. Use the case studies as interesting stories, no more. Adopt and adapt his thinking for the win.
How The Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give InHow The Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give In by Jim Collins
Buy new: $16.31 / Used from: $11.95
And for exactly the same reasons, you want to read the opposite side of Collins' thinking. In this book he lays out a cautionary tale that executives can use to assess and determine whether your organization is starting to see the signs and portents of a downward cycle.
The Mind Of The Strategist: The Art of Japanese BusinessThe Mind Of The Strategist: The Art of Japanese Business by Kenichi Ohmae
Buy new: $12.89 / Used from: $1.72
Ohmae was a partner at McKinsey when he wrote this - years ago - and it still stands as one of the best books of its kind. Not only does it explain "Japanese" business but it is directly applicable to all best of breed business thinking worldwide.
Tactics: The Art and Science of SuccessTactics: The Art and Science of Success by Edward De Bono
Buy used from: $19.10
Edward De Bono is best known for his Six Thinking Hats (which is also a good read) but I like this book better for the executive reader. It's more directed toward what you need - now - as it focuses on the applied, tactical thinking necessary to get and stay where you want to go.
The World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first CenturyThe World Is Flat 3.0: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.34
I'm a fan of Tom Friedman - at least some of the time. This book provides an excellent thinking strategy for a globalized world. His ten "flatteners" give you the guidance you need to figure out how to use this landscape to your benefit - as well as what to avoid.
Kotler on MarketingKotler on Marketing by Philip Kotler
Buy new: $25.10 / Used from: $15.67
This was Philip Kotler's first trade book presenting not just what marketing is but what every executive needs to know about how to make marketing the strategic differentiator it needs to be in your organization.
Chaotics: The Business of Managing and Marketing in the Age of TurbulenceChaotics: The Business of Managing and Marketing in the Age of Turbulence by Philip Kotler
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $13.49
This is Kotler's most recent book and it, as all his books do, gives you both the explanation and guidance you need to traverse the fast and furious landscape of 21st century, multi-dimensional marketing.
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big DifferenceThe Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $1.49
On this one, go for the thinking - not the stories. It's not about whether you agree with what he's describing. It's about understanding how little things make a big difference and, particularly, what to look for in your organization that can make that difference.
The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of LifeThe Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life by Alice Schroeder
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $7.75
I am a great fan of Buffett - not as much for his investment prowess (although that's legion) but because of his management thinking. This book takes you through how that thinking developed and grew into the billions that he created for himself and his investors. A wonderful read.
The Management of InnovationThe Management of Innovation by Tom Burns
Buy new: $65.00 / Used from: $72.53
This is one of those books that if you want to know how Google became Google, you need to read this one. It is the granddaddy of books on innovative organizations (circa 1962) and their management. The authors couldn't have known, but they were laying out the basis for the future.
Quality Productivity and Competitive PositionQuality Productivity and Competitive Position by W. E. Deming
Buy used from: $6.38
Whether you are in the midst of a quality improvement initiative or just thinking about starting one, get your hands on a copy of this book. This was Deming's first comprehensive description of his theory - eventually, morphing into Out of the Crisis. I like it better than its successors.
Out of the CrisisOut of the Crisis by W. Edwards Deming
Buy new: $21.94 / Used from: $11.55
This book is not an easy read. Deming rarely made it easy for executives - because, like me, he had unending faith in your ability to learn and apply what you need to know. This book gives you more than the theoretical underpinnings of "quality improvement." It gives you the keys to the kingdom of organizational knowledge and understanding.
The Deming Management MethodThe Deming Management Method by Mary Walton
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $0.01
This is a wonderful guide to understanding what Deming was saying in more accessible language and structure than Deming's own. (He was a statistician, after all.) Walton does an excellent job of giving you a well-thought overview of what Deming's theory says and will do for you as an executive and for your organization.
Management Challenges for the 21st Century (Classic Drucker Collection)Management Challenges for the 21st Century (Classic Drucker Collection) by Peter F. Drucker
Buy used from: $31.33
If you've not read a book by Peter Drucker, this is a good place to start. Then, when he's captured your imagination for what is, what can be and how to get there, be prepared to find yourself developing a Drucker library. Also, as Drucker was one of Deming's favorite theorists, you'll see an interesting fit in their theories.
The Art of WarThe Art of War by Sun Tzu
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.00
To read Sun Tzu is to understand that competition is a dance and that you, as leader, must understand not only your steps, but those of your people and competitors. In so doing, you take the lead, reduce the force required and win.
The Book of Five RingsThe Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.93
This book is slightly less well known than Sun Tzu's The Art of War, but, just as that book is an invaluable executive read, so is this. The key is to know when to fight - and when not to. Then you figure out how.
On WarOn War by Carl von Clausewitz
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.49
We may not like to liken business to war - but it is. Or a dance. You get to choose. With this book, in concert with The Art of War and The Book of Five Rings, you have eery aspect of the military/organizational strategic thinking to add to your leadership repertoire for those times your organization - and the competition - so require.
The Monk and the Riddle: The Art of Creating a Life While Making a LivingThe Monk and the Riddle: The Art of Creating a Life While Making a Living by Randy Komisar
Buy new: $13.60 / Used from: $6.49
The dot com boom (and bust) provided a great deal of learning. This tale, beautifully written by a successful venture capitalist (think TiVo), provides guidance on how to balance a life of treasure-filled dreams with a fulfilling daily reality.
The Phantom TollboothThe Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.52
Don't ever mistake this book for a children's book. It is an allegory for the adventure you are on as you build your organization. It also includes my favorite quote of all time: "You can swim all day in the Sea of Knowledge and still come out completely dry. Most people do."
Oh, the Places You'll Go! Deluxe Edition (Classic Seuss)Oh, the Places You'll Go! Deluxe Edition (Classic Seuss) by Dr. Seuss
Buy new: $16.50 / Used from: $12.98
I love this book. Passionately. It was Dr. Seuss' last and, by far, his best. This book gives you the journey - howling Hackken-Kraks and all - with every expectation that you'll succeed. Because you will.
Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, U.S. Wireless)Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, U.S. Wireless)
Buy used from: $277.60
And, finally, I'm including the Kindle simply because, if your library is as full as mine and you travel as much as I do, this is a wonderful tool to add to your executive toolkit. Don't forget to get the free iPhone app, too!
