The passions beneath the surface.
RUBY'S BUCKET OF BLOOD tells the tale of people caught up in a cycle of unhappiness and how they found what they wanted, if only for a little while. Set in the segregated sixties in a bayou town, Angela Bassett and Kevin Anderson star as Ruby, the owner of her own juke joint and married to a man who has distanced himself from her, both emotionally and physically. Her 15-year-old daughter, Emerald, feels she is too good to be a part of her mother's life and the town she stays in. Kevin's Billy Dupree is a talented white blues singer, married to a woman he loves, but is not in love with, due to the guilt they both feel after the death of their son. Glenn Plummer also stars as Johnny, the guitarist of the band that performs their regularly. He is trying to live the life that makes his family happy, while keeping his desire for someone else under wraps. It's these complex relationships that propel the movie along, and Angela Bassett is to be commended for turning in a supurb performance of a woman who wants more out of her life than what she feels she is expected to have and nothing more, even if it's with someone who could get her killed. Recommended for the romantic at heart.
Ruby's Bucket Of Blood
Great Cast ~ Kevin Anderson is just so great as the part of Billy~ This is the first time I've seen Kevin Anderson in any movie ~ And he is to die for Handsome~ I'd of liked to hear him "Sing" more in this film~ Boy can he sing? YES!!!
The Great Angela Bassett does a wonderful part as Ruby~ Left by her husband with a 15 y.o. beautiful daughter alone to look after Emerald (the Daughter) and run a Bar "Ruby's Bucket of Blood" in the Louisiana Bayou's in the segregated south early 60's era.
The chemistry between Kevin and Angela on screen is "Dynamic"~
Their relationship is just beginning and beautifully so ~ until it is brought to a tragic ending via Billy's crazed wife~
I loved when confronted by Billy's Wife if his feelings for Ruby mattered "he said what passed between the two (Billy and Ruby) did matter". Had things taken a different turn in just a brief moment the Relationship between Ruby and Billy could have been wonderful~ Both starved for love and both finding it together if only for a brief moment in time.
If you are looking for the usual "Happy Ending" you won't find it here.
I am waiting for the Sound Track to be released which will be a MUST HAVE~
I'd also like to see a lot more of "Kevin Anderson in Film"~ He is just Dynamic~Did I mention to die for Handsome? ? ?
Buy this "Film" ~ It is a Great Movie! I love it!!!
You won't forget Kevin Anderson after seeing this film~ I promise!!!
I loved this movie!
Unfortunately, the title of Ruby's Bucket of Blood probably has prevented a lot of people from watching it. It took me a year of seeing it in the video store before renting it. It is a great ensemble piece that takes place in the bayous of Louisiana. All of the actors gave highly nuanced performances that truly depicted their characters. The screenplay provided the viewers with a finely tuned Cajun and Creole experience, and was instrumental in creating a realistic portrayal of interracial love, family dynamics and the power of music in Louisiana before the Civil Rights Movement.
Angela Bassett was phenomenal and every scene was on target. The sexual tension between her and Kevin Anderson was palpable and continued to build until the climactic scene. I did not think the other side stories were at all distracting, rather they gave the surrounding characters more humanity and added to the complexity of the movie.
And the music - it was great! Angela Bassett really can belt out a blues tune and Kevin Anderson's voice and stage persona were simply amazing. Ruby's Bucket of Blood makes the viewer feel the excitement of a juke joint on a good night when the music is stompin and the booze is flowin. Terrific film.
