Album Description
Yazoo( or Yaz in the US) was the duo of Vince Clarke and Allison Moyet. They released two albums, "Upstairs At Eric's " and "You and Me Both." After they split up Vince Clarke formed Erasure with Andy Bell. Allison Moyet went on to release many well recieved solo albums.
Nobody's Diary is a tribute to this influential electronic pop duo. Bands from the wide range of electronic pop contribute covers of their favorite songs. From the sweet pop of Electrosquad to the driving beats of Vivid Suspense to the quirky expiramentla pop of Marianne Nowottny each track sheds new light on the duo's songs.
Customer Reviews
Not bad, not great.
Few tribute albums live up to the origional artist's songs they do cover versions of... this album is no exception. None of the artists can match Alison Moyets deep and soulful voice. On the other hand the covers of "Situation" and "Don't Go" are very good. Over all this album is hit or miss.
What the FLIP?!!!!!
1. Science Park's version of "Winter Kills" is "Mercedes McCambridge On Crack" with "Polymorphia" from The Exorcist Soundtrack on instruments. It's horrible and droning.
2. "Situation" as it appears on the "Only You" single is NOT to be messed with. I think if one is attempting to honor the artist by doing a cover, you should at LEAST employ a decent vocalist. Allison Mayer's vocal is bad Karaoke at best, it is reverb gone bad.
3. Soviet does a good job with it's interpretation of "In My Room". Sounds close to Vince Clark's vocal while not being too much of a pure copy. I find this song to be a treat.
4. "Bad Connection" , Yeah! This great tune is done as well as Mr. Clarke, not to mention Mr. Blue. Empire State Human should be applauded for their input on this Collection. The vocals are sweeping and the instrumention is akin. The only good song on this LP.
5. "Don't Go" done by Ganymede: The bass is pure and decent, funky as hell with a tonal quality to it. If this track were stripped down it would be as perfect as Empire State Human's "Bad Connection". Good job!
6. Not horrible, but close. Sounds like Woody Allen on vocals. At least this stays on semi-tune, can't say much for some other tracks here. Sounds as if Strange Angels only heard this tune the day they recorded it. Not a good delivery at all.
7. "Winter Kills" slaughtered by Vivid Suspense: Wannabe! Horrible track with a Marilyn Manson vocal, just a trifle more fem. Total crap.
8. The Agency has done a moderate job with "Walk Away From Love". They stay in tune, but still finds me not having fun and only thinking of Moyet's voice.
9. "Nobody's Diary" is just not good out of the mouth and fingers of Cosmicity. Go away from Yazoo.
10. What the blip? This sucks. I don't know who Marianne Nowottny thinks she is, but this is psychotic. "I Before I Except After C" is not even DONE here. There is only a few seconds of the TRUE song within this mess.
11. A little too much synth on this one. It messes the whole thing up. Electrosqaud's vocal isn't half bad, but the instrumentation is horrible.
12. The beautiful "And On" is ruined here by Macondo. Stupidity remixed, go home.
13. This version of "Too Pieces" by Blind Before Dawn isn't NEARLY as good as Empire State Human's. The music is fair within the pop sample, but it's too HI NRG. Bye Bye. Hang up....
14. "Midnight" isn't horrible, but again, it's hard to top Moyet's vocal. Boring.
15. Exhibition's take on "Nobody's Diary" is good. I'm impressed. They added a trifle too much riff, but it's okay, and it's fun. I'm still needing Moyet though.
16. LOVE the piano intro, what a great way to redo "Don't Go" Spray! But wait, what happened with the vocal? Karaoke crap.
17. Jimmy! Jimmy! Jimmy Harris STOP! You stink!
18. This track is next to best, second only to Empire State Human's "Too Pieces". This attempt works. Very pleasing to the Yazzed up ear.
19. This is the ONLY track on this LP that I COULD NOT finish listening to. The choral monotonic quality is violently awful. Elevated Sins, aptly fitting name. "Winter Kills", no this track does. Horrible. About 1:40 seconds into this song you'll find yourself reaching for the off switch.
All in all, this LP just isn't worthy of your money. It is worthy of your time, if you can get this one used, do it. Don't buy it new, like I did, you'll regret it. Horrible on the whole.
ZORAX . Oh Good Times.
This album really rocks, except number 10,it kills the flow, But Other Wise A Real Great Tribute to YAZ.
