Customer Reviews

Break out your headphones ...and slide rule...and wallet4
Absynth is an amazing-sounding soft synth, but be prepared for an extra-large learning curve. Definately download the demo from Native Instruments
website before buying.

Considering the asking price and depth of the application, the included documentation was scant and rather hard to follow.

The manual was either translated from German to English, or written by someone for whom English is a second language. Obtuse nomeclature.

I have not been able to find a third-party manual for Absynth 4, but there is a DVD out that covers Absynth 3 - Be forwarned that it is a DVD ROM (can't play on standard DVD player). It makes sense to me now, as it
is designed to be used as an interactive program, but it is not advertised as such, and I didn't find out until I received the disc.

Anyway, the disc is from Native Instruments, and cost fifty bucks - they should have included the video with the program.

If this is your first foray into virtual synths, and playing with the Absynth 4 demo leads you to believe you're in over your head, then you should test drive one of Native Instruments other products, namely Massive. It is far more clear cut.

Installation is a huge problem3
Before you buy any Native Instruments product, I highly recommend you read up a little on Native Instruments Service Center. You need to understand how many people have enormous difficulties getting this program to run, and that you cannot activate a Native Instruments product unless you can get it to run. I have installed music software from scores of companies for many years, and the problems with Native Instruments installation are very hard to believe until you've been through them. I've just made the mistake of buying Absynth 4, and I think I basically just flushed money down the drain, since you can't return software, and I can't get it activated.

I've been through this before with NI products, but it's been a while and I forgot, and I was stupid. I'll definitely never buy another NI product again--although they are all wonderful once you get them running. This issue with installation is intolerable--of course, many users get it going with no problem, but I'm telling you, the percentage of users who have a huge wrestling match with activating the products is VERY high with NI, and if you're one of the unlucky ones, you will want to kill someone. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
