Guild Wars MMORPG Review
I bought this product on sale for $42 USD Before tax. That price bought me the 3 main games (the original prophecies, factions and nightfall) as well as the "Eye of the North" Expansion that apparently will have expandable / earnable content for Guild Wars 2 when it comes out.
The graphics are realistic and beautiful. They run easily on a mid-range computer. The gameplay is comprehensive and levelling system based on the premise that you don't want to have to play the game forever before getting into it (ie: max lvl 20). You have the option of jumping into the game and developping your character in a roleplaying scenario before moving onto PvP mode, or can create a lvl20 character specifically for PvP right away. This gives the player a lot of freedom to build different characters and try many combinations of professions without having to spend HOURS levelling those characters up. As well, the freedom to train and untrain skills and move your attribute pts around at will gives you the ability to specialize your character for whatever you wish and the peace of mind to know that you can redesign without recreating.
The little drawback this game does have is offset by the fact that you only have your initial purchase price and NO ONLINE FEES. This MMORPG is free to play online and I highly advise it to anyone who enjoys these types of games but disagrees with paying a montly subscription fee on top of your initial purchase price to do so.
I very much enjoy this game and recommend it.
Not quite an "MMO" but lots of fun
My husband and I quickly jumped on the Guild Wars bandwagon when it was released. We had fun for a couple weeks, and then I started to lose interest once I reached level 20. I was accustomed to leveling up to 50, 60, 70 in an MMO and I didn't see much point in continuing to play if I wasn't progressing my character.
My husband continued to play and regularly sang its praises to me, and I started to reconsider. My issue with Guild Wars was I always looked at it as an MMORPG, which it is not. It's a single player game that allows you to play with up to 8 people online who you meet up with in towns. It has much in common with Diablo in that players can meet up in a chat room and join a game together. In Guild Wars, instead of a chat room, you go into town. If you go into the game realizing this, you shouldn't be disappointed.
If you are looking for a persistent world and dozens of levels to conquer, Guild Wars will likely disappoint you. However, if you are looking for a single player, story-driven adventure that you can share with up to 8 friends, it's fantastic. The story is compelling, well-written and engaging. The cinematics feature your own character with voice overs and all. You really do feel like the hero of the story.
Guild Wars is also highly customizable. Each time you go into town, you can change your skills, attributes and secondary class. The best part is, these changes are free! You have oodles of sets of armor to choose from which are crafted for you by NPCs once you collect the right materials. If you're not the type that likes to spend hours gathering materials, fear not. You can buy them from the material trader who charges you based on how in demand that particular material is.
There are various armor sets with very distinct appearances that you can acquire. You can also dye every piece of your armor and have a range of basic colors to choose from. Add this to all the options in character creation and you're not likely to see two characters that look the same. There are many faces and hairstyles to choose from for each profession, and each campaign brings new faces, hairstyles, hair colors, skintones and armors to each one. You can change the height of your character and give them a unique name. Names like "Henry the Great" and "Mistress of the Night" are possible. You aren't limited to a single first name and last name.
Besides the fantastic storyline, my favorite part about Guild Wars is the countless quests and heroes. You never run out of quests to do and I love quests! Once you've reached level 20, you can continue adventuring and doing quests to gain new items, new skills, new titles, and more. As for heroes, they are like additional characters, whose skills attributes and armor you can customize just like your own. They level up and grow with you and you can even change their secondary professions as well. There are many to unlock and it's fun trying to find them all. If you don't feel like playing with other players, you can fill your party up with henchmen and heroes, up to 8 total including yourself.
Heroes are, in essence, like pets which you can instruct to attack certain targets, guard a specific location, instruct to heal only and avoid combat, etc. It's like controlling your own little army when you get into those quests that add even more soldiers for you to control. Lots of fun!
Everything that you discover and unlock in PvE also unlocks those items and skills for your PvP characters, which many will argue is the true goal of the game. Your PvP characters start at level 20 and you can equip them with anything you want, as long as you've unlocked it through PvE play. For those who just want to jump right into PvP, you can purchase the unlock packs from the Guild Wars store right from your game.
Last but not least are the beautiful graphics. They are low poly but highly detailed much like World of Warcraft but with more realism. This makes the game run flawlessly on most machines without sacrificing visual quality. Even though the game is becoming dated, it's still a beautiful game.
I highly recommend picking up the trilogy with Eye of the North. Going through all 4 campaigns with a single character will take you dozens of hours and you won't be disappointed.
Great game, Great price.
This game is so much fun if you really like role-playing games. You get to create a character based on what type of attributes you want the character to have. You get many choices of faces, hairstyles, haircolor, skin color, height. The best part of this game is the fact that you don't have to pay a monthly fee to play. You pay for the game and that is it. This bundle is a great deal. It is much cheaper getting it in a bundle like this than buying all the games separately, if you don't already have any of the Guild Wars games.
