From Jazziz
"He put the big band in clave," says producer Todd Barkan of Chico O'Farrill, the Cuban composer and conductor behind Heart of a Legend. "I would put him right there at the top of the list of modern Latin-jazz pioneers." Barkan says this new record was made, in part, to present the entire spectrum of O'Farrill's work. Naturally, it includes a version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," which O'Farrill arranged as a four-movement suite in 1954. Our featured track, "Guaguasí," is a mambo, with solos by some distinguished Latin-jazz stars: trombonist Gary Valente, trumpeter Chocolate Armenteros, and alto saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera.

Customer Reviews
A great legend in Afro-Cuban Jazz
In his big band historical format, Chico O'Farrill brings to the latin jazz fans -equal at the "Pure Emotion" Grammy nominated- more beatiful tracks. Guagasi is the base of two anthology themes: first, "Te quiero", is a good motive to the brightness guageo of Gato Barbieri's tenor sax; second, the beatiful balad "Sin tu Amor" with the sensual voice of Vivian Ara. In my opinion, the top moment in the Chico's music to be enough in the "Trumpet Fantasy" suite, dedicated to Wynton Marsalis, one of the more brillant music friends of that legendary director and composer in afro-cuban jazz music.
