Candido Magnifico
Candido Camera, Havana-born conga/bongo player extraordinaire, was the heir apparent to Latin drummer Chano Pozo after the latter's death in 1950. This ABC Paramount album, his first issued under his own name, was made in 1956, and features the great Cuban drummer with Al Cohn (ts) Joe Puma (g) and Dick Katz (p), along with Whitey Mitchell (b) and Ted Sommer (d). Candido is a marvelous soloist, building from simplicity to more intricate rhythmic patterns as he progresses; sometimes, as on CHEEK TO CHEEK, he plays repetitive patterns until a powerful hypnotic effect almost sets in. I find his playing in exchanges such as the 4-bar exchanges he makes with Cohn on BROADWAY and MAMBO INN to be particularly intriguing. Cohn solos well throughout, but is especially good on the up-tempo numbers (CANDI BAR, BROADWAY, PERDIDO, CANDIDO'S CAMERA), where you almost expect Zoot Sims to come sailing in right behind him. Joe Puma solos on just about every tune and swings nicely. Katz is also very good and lays down a dynamite solo on PERDIDO. Although the album features the great Latin drummer, it's really a straight-ahead modern jazz outing - and a very good one at that.

EXCELLENT
This is an excellent album, great percussion by Candido Camera, a mainstay in the 50's-early 60's on jazz recordings. Great accompaniment, this album swings bigtime. If you like jazz, you will likwe this CD.
