Customer Reviews
At last!!!
This is it, if you like Arturos old latin style from Cuba, this is it. This is a lot of big orchestras here, and some small bands. Not so much solos but still enough. I have all this on LP but cds got a bit better sound. A must for fans.... Also if you like Arturos old playing, check out Estrellas De Areito, Los Heroes from 1979, double cd available on this site....nice!!!
Arturo just before making it big.
If you love Arturo you'll love this cd. It features some of his "theme" songs before he "super charged" them.
A foreshadowing of great things to come
Arturo's early Cuban recordings are essential to understanding and fully appreciating his accomplishments as a trumpeter. This CD includes his first two albums as a solo artist, originally titled "Turi" (1981, tracks 1-6) and "Arturo Sandoval" (1982, tracks 7-15). The variety is impressive, displaying both his Latin roots and his admiration for the musicians of other nations who have influenced him. If you enjoy Arturo's powerful melody lines soaring above full orchestra backup, the 1982 tracks will give you pure pleasure. For those who are looking for displays of his virtuoso technique and dazzling high register, in an environment featuring more improvisation, the 1981 tracks will not disappoint. A couple of highlights:
"Maria" from West Side Story is obviously a nod to Maynard Ferguson, rendered in a similar arrangement and even borrowing some of the licks from Maynard's recording of the song.
"Blues in Two Parts" immediately struck me as a homage to Clark Terry, even before I read the dedication in the track listing. But the second of the two parts dramatically picks up the pace to emulate the style of another trumpet hero, Dizzy Gillespie.
Michel Legrand's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" is given unusual and interesting treatment, starting out as a samba and then accelerating wildly to provide a background for trumpet pyrotechnics.
This collection is a piece of trumpet heaven, so if that's where you want to be (at least for a little over an hour), this CD is for you.
