A Classic Approach Made Contemporary
By now, Arturo O'Farrill has his own following, not just those who are interested in the popular "guests" he has had on previous work. His piano range is wide, both in style and technique. This album showcases his arranging and leadership talent, as well. Anyone who enjoys the rhythms of Afro-Cuban music will appreciate the tight style of the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra that makes just listening without moving to the beat almost impossible. A deft mix of old and new tunes, including the title homage to his father, Chico, who was such a force in bring this music to the USA over half a century ago. The update on the classic "Caravan" makes a great start for the CD. Don't miss his "Picadillo", the best version since Cal Tjader's. Here's hoping that this proves the springboard for greater recognition and success.
Stunning - truly stunning
I have a rather large "desert-island" collection of jazz CDs - but if I could only take one, it might be this one.
I heard the first track ("Caravan") on the radio one night, and immediately bought the CD. The song nearly blew my speakers out, the playing is so adventurous.
I'm not going to give any more details - just trust me, if you love jazz, you will surely love this absolute gem of a record. Although the sound is very different, this reminds me of listening to Cannonball (i.e., the big bold "knock-em dead" sound.)
I hope Mr. O'Farrill gets to read this review someday....you and your Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra have created something I'll be listening to for a long, long time. Five stars and the mere 17 dollars I paid, doesn't do enough justice, so all I can say to anyone reading this....BUY THIS CD!

An old DJ's observations
In an earlier life I was a "DJ" and acquired an appreciation for a variety of music forms. The intrigue of jazz stuck. This is a CD well worth the listen. The rendition of Caravan and Cuban Blues are the highlights from my perspective. The restraint of the trombones in Caravan is as controlled as I have ever heard it, and Cuban Blues is as pensive as one could imagine.
This talented musician wants to credit his genetics (Chico O'Farrill was genius in his own right), But I'll assert he has his own style and persuasion that is addictive, to say the least.
It is a no brainer to see how this CD was awarded a Grammy.
