Customer Reviews
A very ambitious timba project that paid off
They take plenty from the Cuban crowd, but they don't copy them.
Their cover of "Calle Luna, Calle Sol" is amazing. Halfway through the track a new montuno comes in, they switch the tempo completely. And throughout the album the band does plenty of tempo changes, breaks, and tough mon~as. The band's incredible instrumentation includes trumpets, saxes, and trombones and they also throw a flute and synth-violin in a couple of tracks. Again, this makes them sound similar to the big Havana bands such as Manolito, Van Van, and Pupy.
But while they sound similar, they don't sound exactly the same, and in this case that is a good thing. While the pianist can play well fast, he often plays slowly. Their lyrics include some Havana style singing, but they also do some rhyming and salsa style singing. They sometimes have gritty lyrics similar to NYC bands like La Excelencia.
