Even though these books are geared towards girls ages 8-12. My boys found these books to be a wonderful series. We were given books 1 and 2 in the series. My boys enjoy mystery books and love solving Scooby Doo cartoons. They read these books from start to finish and I have to say I enjoyed reading them as well. Finding suitable reading material for girls, ages 8 to 12, is sometimes tricky. With the abundance of vampires, werewolves and other icky creatures being the theme of so many "teen" novels, it's a breath of fresh air to find a sweet, fun adventure series that is age-appropriate for young girls. The "Camp Club Girls" series features a group of friends, six girls in all, who meet at summer church camp and become life-long friends. Each girl is unique in her own way, and all of them are blessed with the gift of curiousity that sometimes leads them into a bit of trouble now and then. There's Elizabeth, from Amarillo and, as the oldest, the group's leader; Sydney, the active girl from Washington D.C.; McKenzie, the cowgirl from Montana; Alexis, the California cheerleader; Bailey, the golf prodigy from Peoria, Illinois; and Kate, the gadget girl from Philadelphia. The first book, "Camp Club Girls and The Mystery at Discovery Lake," introduces readers to the girls and tells the story of how they all meet at Camp Discovery, a summer youth camp. The girls, who live all over the country, soon find that they all love trying to solve a good mystery. And when they discover that the miniature golf course at their camp seems to be the center of some spooky activity, the girls form a super sleuth ring and are soon up to their ears in hunting for lost treasure, trying to catch a would-be thief, and keeping up with their camp activities all at the same time! The second book, "Sydney's D.C. Discovery," finds Sydney and her friend Elizabeth suddenly at the center of a would-be terrorist plot to harm the President of the United States. When suspicious activities start occurring at the Vietnam Memorial, Sydney, whose aunt is a tour guide at the memorial, and Elizabeth, who is visiting Washington with her uncle, a Vietnam vet, decide to try and figure out what is going on. The girls, with a lot of help from their Camp Club girlfriends, soon are chasing down shady characters, and helping the Secret Service break up a plan to cause chaos in the United States. The "Camp Club Girls" series is reminiscent of the "Nancy Drew" mystery novels of a generation or two ago, with a fresh spin that will keep a young mystery fan of today interested. Besides the adventure aspect of the books, there is also a faith-based message to each story that fits into each plot. Nothing too "in-your-face," but important nonetheless. The series is scheduled to have two books per month published, each book featuring a different character, but involving all of the "Camp Club Girls," and will run through 2011. I am so excited about the Camp Club Girls book series. My daughter loves books that come in series. She gets hooked and it really gets her reading. This new series is so great for young girls. They will love to join the adventures. Check out Chapter One of the newest Camp Club Girls book. If you know girls ages 9-12 these books would be a great gift. I enjoyed this mystery very much. It was cute and funny, but with enough twists and suspense to keep me reading. The girls are very believable. They are good, sweet girls, but not perfect. They do a good job at camp, but they aren''t above sneaking around to investigate or hide a puppy. Tweens and young teens will relate to the girls, and hopefully learn to think before they judge others too. I also like how much Scripture Brumbaugh quotes. The girls must memorize Scripture as part of the competition at the end of camp, and Brumbaugh does a good job showing how the verses relate to the girls'' lives. The mystery aspect is very similar to the Nancy Drew books, but Brumbaugh acknowledges it, as the girls are always saying, "Nancy Drew would do this," or "Nancy Drew would say that." I'm really excited about this series because the stories are fast-paced, entertaining and interesting! Plus, girls will love the Camp Club Girls! This is wholesome, fun reading for your girls, and lots of it. The series has 24 books planned, so those that enjoy the first installation will have more to look forward to. This series has a lot to offer to young readers! It has adventure and friendship, intrigue and scripture. It has a great combination of ideas and I loved it. When I was young I LOVED reading the Sweet Valley Twins books, Nancy Drew and The Babysitters Club (remember those?!). Well, I'm happy to say that Barbour is releasing a new line of books similar to these for Christian girls. The Camp Club Girls series centers around a group of girls who meet at Camp Discovery. They become friends and form a group they call the 'Camp Club Girls' and soon find themselves embroiled in mysteries and adventures galore. These books are great for tween girls (ages 8 - 12). They have all the zany fun and intrigue of books like Sweet Valley, but they also include a component that none of those that I listed above do: the spiritual component. Nancy Drew Meets the Babysitters Club
I want to recommend Camp Club Girls to every pre-teen girl you know, but I have a few reservations. The book has a lot of action and the story moves quickly, which will attract a young reader. Six girls at a Christian summer camp find a puppy and stumble on a mystery. The girls develop a wholesome and loyal friendship and they try to be nice to the obligatory mean girl in camp. But they hide the puppy in their cabin and spend their free time poking into things that are none of their business. While doing so, they break a few rules and come close to invading someone's privacy. Eventually they realize not everything they are doing is right, but in the end they solve the mystery and are rewarded for it. Their deception and rule breaking are ignored by the adults at the camp.

Aside from this confusing message about right and wrong, the book has a Christian viewpoint and at least one girl has a strong relationship with God. She competes in a Bible memory contest and spends some time thinking about the scriptures she is learning. She wants to please God and her attitude influences the other girls.

At first, I found it difficult to tell the six main characters apart. Point of view changes added to the confusion, although by the end of the book, three of the characters stood out from the others. I also couldn't quite accept the girls' age differences. I don't know any 14 year old who would become best friends with a 9 year old.

Overall, it's a good book and, if you discuss the morality of deception with your young reader, I think you can let her enjoy it.

Pros: Fun story about friendship and loyalty. It's action packed with some pauses for messages from scripture.

Cons: The dialogue is a bit stilted; the girls use big words and clichés. The biggest problem is the deception that goes unacknowledged.

Fun and Wholesome
This is a great book for the nine to twelve year old set. The characters are fun and believable and for the most part talk just like nine to twelve year olds. There's petite Katie with a huge appetite, Bailey who wants to be the next star pro-golfer and Elizabeth who is a kind of mentor to all six of the girls, showing them patience and meekness.

It's refreshing to come across a novel for kids that is innocent and wholesome. There is enough mystery and intrigue to keep a young reader guessing without losing them in the process. And its done in a fun setting - a summer camp. One that I personally can relate to, having worked at a summer camp for four seasons.

Spend Some Time Away At Camp

Camp Club Girls and the Mystery at Discovery Lake is a delightful book for young girls and tweens. It is the first book in a series that focuses on the adventures of six young girls who meet and become fabulous friends at a Christian camp. These girls all have unique personalities but are tied together by sharing the same camp dorm and their love for mysteries.

This first book in the series gives the reader a chance to get to know each girl and work on some sleuthing.

I like that the girls bonded and stood by each other. These are characters that are really good role models of how friends should support each other. There are definitely some hijinx involved, but that is part of the fun. There is also a spiritual component that is really a breath of fresh air. I always wanted to go to summer camp, and when I was a young girl, I would grab any book I could find that related to that. This book definitely would fit the bill.
