Works great IF you can get it installed
The web is full of posts by irate purchasers of this little camera that simply couldn't get it to work. With good reason. The software that is shipped with the product is total junk. Fortunately what is available on-line is better. Here's how to solve the black screen problem on an XP. The key is not to allow the machine to install the driver for you. You must install the driver from the device manager in your system folder. The reality is that it is a nice little device ONCE you get it to work.
First, toss the software that came with the camera. Go to http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-459-10-dynex-desktop-web-camera.aspx and download the software you actually need to run the device. (If you previously installed the software, it would be best to remove it before starting.) Download the new software, unzip it and you'll have a dynex folder containing an install file. With your camera NOT connected to your computer, install the software, including the WebCompanion2 program from ArcSoft (this will happen automatically after the Dynex software installs). Reboot if asked to do so. Hook up the camera. Abort any attempt by the computer to search for the needed driver itself. Go to your control panel and find your systems folder. In that folder, find the device manager under the hardware tab. Locate "imaging device" and locate the Dynex camera. Right click on it, then select "update driver". Again, don't let the computer find what you need. Opt to manually locate it and direct the computer to look to the dynex folder most likely on your desktop or found under Programs. Three drivers are found. Two certified and labeled "PC Cam", the other not certified and labeled "Dynex Cam". Select Dynex. That's it. Your camera should work.
Obviously, this is not the way these products should work. You should not have to go through so much grief just to install it.
Clear crystal quality
I know this camera has had a bit of a bad rap, but I'm here to clear all that up. After getting it set up right after some research, I found this webcam to be a nice & neat gadget. The video & picture qualities are somewhat more refined than the Microsoft VX-3000 (which I own as well). And the mic on the camerca works fine as long as the echoes are cleared out (which happens to all mics once in a while). I strongly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a nice lil webcam with multi-functionality with a low price tag.
For direction on getting beyond the black screen:
I realized that 99% of customers (PC) have problems getting beyond the black screen so here's the step by step instruction on on to set your Dynex DX-DTCAM correctly.
1.) Without plugging in the webcam, install the driver directly from the CD-ROM
2.) Now plug in the webcam into the USB, and Windows will say "new device detected"
3.) Click the advanced option in wich you can choose the drivers folder. Then on the next window you click on the *manually choose* option.
4.) You will see the Dinex drivers appear, select it and install.
DO NOT UPDATE DRIVERS FROM THE DYNEX SUPPORT SITE. It's useless & will confuse the hardware.

Great for the money
This is a great webcam. We went to Best Buy, and after much discussion and speculation, we decided to get this camera. We had to decide between this, and much more expensive webcam that was on sale. I am glad we bought this. After we got past the black screen (thanks to the instructions from a previous reviewer), it went smooth as silk. It has great picture quality and microphone quality for its price. It doesn't come with a lot of extras, but who needs them? I am glad we got this one.
